the master device goes at the end of the 18-inch (460 mm) cable—the black connector—and the slave device goes on the middle connector


From my previous post. It may NOT be that way s that is known as cable select. It is quite safe to ease the connector off using the actual cable - gently of course one side and then the other.

If you find that the machine will not then boot - to the previously described screen, and produces a message no operating system found, insert system disc. reconnect that drive and disconnect the other.

The fact your cable does not have one connector blue is of no importance.

I have just looked at that Maxtor 8.4Gb drive
The jumper pins are NOT two rows of five
They are top row 4 pins
Bottom row 5 pins.
For ease of description
With the power connector to the right as you look at the cables
Master is the first two pins furthest away from the power connector - 1pin top to 1 pin bottom
Cable select is the next two moving towards the power connector - again pin on top row to pin on bottom row
Slave is NO jumper connected top row to bottom row.
See this link - if it does not saty on that drive simply enter the model no.
