Yea, I am using 2003 as well. There is a converter just meant for people like us, It's called the Office Compatibility Pack, and you can read about it and download it from here:

http://office.micros...A010044473.aspx

There are 3rd party converters out there, but I never tried any of them.

Of course, any advanced formatting done to the file by the newest office may not show up when you open it in 2003, but I really have not seen any bad effects on the files that I converted.

Good Luck!

My apologies to Crowbar6761 and others who responded to my earlier query on reading docx files; I failed to see your postings until just now.

Sadly, I am having trouble following through on your suggestion to download the MS Compatability Pack that allows a pc with Office 2003 to read a docx file. After clicking the link to download the file I find that it <does> appear in my Download list, as 4-15-11 GAC.BK (10) (2).docx. But when I click on that element nothing happens.

If I Search for 4-15-11*.docx using the XP search function I find that file IS there, in folder C:\Documents and Settings\AKS\My Documents\Downloads. But if I try to Open that file – using WORD 2003 or Notepad—again nothing happens.

Obviously, I am confused. What do I have to do to the downloaded Compatability file to install it and be able to routinely read docx files?
