Hi there,

My Vista just shut down for no reason while my head was turned. The power just switched off. This has never happened on this computer before. I've restarted it and everything seems to be working fine.

The event viewer says there was an unexpected shutdown. I did a virus scan with AVG just in case and it found one problem

"C:\Acer\Empowering Technology\eRecovery\Autorun\APP\CDMaker\WMFDist.exe";"The file is signed with a broken digital signature, issued by: Microsoft Corporation.";""

I've never seen that in previous scans before but don't know if it could be related.

Is there any way to find out what caused this? I'd be really grateful for any help.

Hi ira_gaines,

What exactly were you doing just prior to this shut down?

WMFDist.exe is a legit Microsoft file by the way and is associated with Windows Media Component Setup Application from Microsoft Corporation.

Just typing something on Word. There weren't any programmes running.

What does it mean when it says the signature is broken?

Thanx

Did you recently update your AVG Program? Everything I find suggests that an update for AVG is the culprit.

Broken Digital Signature: "Broken" is really the wrong term, but it's good enough to get the idea across. A digital signature doesn't really break; rather it fails to verify one of the things above, or fails to pass an additional test or two that might further confirm it's authenticity.

Please read more in this link: What is a "broken digital signature", and is it a problem? If so, why?

A good analogy that comes to mind for me is a false positive. A False Positive is when you think you have a specific vulnerability in a program but in fact you don't. Many security scanners scan an application and attempt to find a vulnerability in it. Sometimes the signatures make mistakes and report a vulnerability that may not exist. If you did recently update your AVG then the possibility that the file was not recognized and targeted as bad because the updated program definitions didn't recognize it.

I wouldn't worry about the Broken Digital Signature, there is no threat there. I'm more concerned about why your computer shut down without a reason. Can a false positive cause that? I'm not quite sure so I will take this question to someone who does know to find out for sure.

Is this a desktop or laptop?

EDIT:
After discussing this issue with a fellow Staff member, I have come to the conclusion that my suspicions concerning a false positive should not cause the computer to shut down, though it is a mechanical device and stranger things have happened!

The event viewer says there was an unexpected shutdown.

Please go back to the Event Viewer and Right click on that particular event that pertains to the spontaneous shut down you experienced and then click to view the report. You should be able to copy the information provided then paste it into your next reply so I can have a look at it.

Thank you,

Donna :D

It's a desktop.

The last update before the shut down was 75 minutes previous and was an anti-spam component.

This is the event log entry. Thanks.

Try this and see if you get a more informative answer to the event that caused the issue.

  • Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso VEW and save it to your Desktop:
  • Double-click VEW.exe
  • Under 'Select log to query', select (as appropriate):
    • Application
    • System
  • Under 'Select type to list', select (as appropriate):
    • Error
    • Information
    • Warning
Then use the 'Date of events' or 'Number of events' as follows:

Either:
  • Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 3 in the 1 to 20 box (or any number from 1 to 20)
    Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

  • Click the radio button for 'Date of events'
In the From: boxes type today's date (presuming the crash happened today) 03 04 2011
In the To: boxes type today's date (presuming the crash happened today) 04 04 2011
    Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.
Please post the Output log in your next reply

Thank you rshaffer61 for you professional guidance.

@ira_gaines,

Hi, I do apologize for the delay. Researching logs can take a little time. This type of log is fairly new to me. I will post back as soon as I develop a complete report from my research as to why your computer had shut down.

Thank you for your patience.

In the meantime just for my curiosity please do the following.

Download Speedfan (The download link is to the right), and install it. Once it's installed, run the program and post here the information it shows.
The information I want you to post is the stuff that is circled in the example picture I have attached.
To make sure we are getting all the correct information it would help us if you were to attach a screenshot like the one below of your Speedfan results.

To do a screenshot please have click on your Print Screen on your keyboard.
  • It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
  • Now go to Start and then to All Programs
  • Scroll to Accessories and then click on Paint
  • In the Empty White Area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
  • Go to the File option at the top and click on Save as
  • Save as file type JPEG and save it to your Desktop
  • Attach it to your next reply
