Also when i try to change my desktop by going to properties from the desktop or doing it through control panel the only tabs remaining in the menu is settings and screesaver. So i cant change my desktop back. Theres also a button thing in the bottom right corner next to the time which is a yellow sign with a black exclemation mark. Here is a log. Please help. Hi vanrebl, welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

Pleae note we are just starting with the Smithfraud infection. There will be other procedures after this to clear up the rest of your system.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

* Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit. *In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

* Reboot into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and tapping F8 continuously as your computer is booting up until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight "Safe Mode", then hit enter

* Once in Safe Mode, please run Killbox.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Open the Notepad file where you saved these instructions earlier, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing CTRL + C:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\param32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\guninst.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wldr.dll

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

After your computer reboots, go into this folder:

C:\WINDOWS\System32

Delete any icons you find in there. For example:

casino.ico
date.ico
games.ico
mobile.ico
network.ico
pharm.ico
pharm2.ico
scanner.ico
spam.ico
spyware.ico

Then download, install, and run CleanUp!

Finally, run HijackThis and with all windows closed except for HJT, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren

The first thing we have to do is repair the trouble that has been caused to your internet access as can be seen in the 010 of your log.

Backup the registry by going to Start>Run> and type ‘regedit’ without the quotes. Then on the file menu choose ‘export’ in XP.

Download the LSPfix.txt and read the readme file.

Download LSPfix.zip or LSPfix.exe

***To start the LSPfix....Close all windows except LSPfix

Launch LSPfix.zip and install to its own folder, then click on LSPfix.exe. Or click on LSPfix.exe and it will launch the program.

In the left hand (keep) LSPfix window there will be a list of files including the identified *.dll files that are listed on the O10 line in the HJT log. These are

xfire_lsp_9028.dll

Put a check mark in the box “I know what I am doing

Move all instances of the identified *.dll files that are listed on the O10 line, from the left window (keep) to the right window (remove) by highlighting the file or files and clicking the arrow.

Click ‘Finish

Now, using Windows Explorer, DELETE the following files:

C:\Windows\System32\xfire_lsp_9028.dll

REBOOT to complete the task.

Now Scan again with HijackThis (ALL windows closed except HJT) and POST a new log file in their thread using “Add Reply”.

Hi plzhelpmea11,

If you are able to disable/Turn Off AOL Spyware Protection, please do so now because these programs are built to not allow the changes that we are hoping to make to your system.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Now let's do some work on your log:

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.updatesea...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.updatesearches.com/bar.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.updatesea...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://www.updatesea...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://www.updatesea...earch.php?qq=%1
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = http://www.updatesearches.com/
O2 - BHO: VMHomepage Class - {FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFA} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hpA1EF.tmp (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WindowsFZ] C:\WINDOWS\System32\LogFiles\A5281300.so
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
O16 - DPF: {15AD6789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://static.windup.../bridge-c11.cab
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-611111193458} - file://c:\ex.cab
O16 - DPF: {43331111-1111-1111-1111-611111195622} - file://c:\ex.cab
O21 - SSODL: SystemCheck2 - {54645654-2225-4455-44A1-9F4543D34545} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2.dll (file missing)

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files, and DELETE them (if they are present):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\msole32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\hpA1EF.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\System32\LogFiles\A5281300.so
c:\ex.cab
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2.dll

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

Regards,

Trevuren
