Computer: Dell Inspiron 8200
Operating System: Windows XP Professional SP3 (build 2600)
Processor: 1.20 ghz Intel Mobile Pentium 4 (not hyper-threaded)
Memory: 1024 MB
Optical Drive: TEAC-CD224E
Hard Drive: Hitachi_DK23EB-40 (40 GB)

Problem: The computer completely freezes once it begins to run a cd or dvd. It freezes to a point where the screen remains in the desktop but there is no activity. I cannot even press alt+ctrl+delete to get the task manager. I have tried different types of cds and dvds and the problem always occurs.

The DVD-ROM works fine through safe mode though. I was able to copy and paste some programs into the pc in safe mode to verify that the DVD-ROM works.

Please help me with this. Thank you to all in advance.

Go start, right click My Computer , click properties, on the window that opens click hardware then click the device manager button.
Are there any warnings against devices.
particularly against the CD DVD drive.

On the view tab click shown hidden devices.
Are there now any warnings.

Either work according to the warning if you know how or post the details

Thank you for the quick reply.

There are some warnings under "Non-Plug and Play Drivers"

mdmxsdk displays a yellow question mark. It says that the device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed (code 24).

SymEvent displays a yellow question mark. It says that the device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed (code 24).

What can I do about these?

While I look at the will you please go here
http://search.dell.c...=False&~ck=anav

Commission that for your particular Dell and operating system.
Download the latest driver for the DVD/CD
Uninstall the present driver throught device manager.
Then on install driver, do not let windows automatically search as it will of course simply reinstall the one you have just uninstalled.
Use the I will select and point it to that driver you have downloaded.

The first listed on your post is connected with a modem
The second one is Symantec which is your backup, security etc as Dell have of course long partnered with Symantec.

I do not immediately connect these issues with the present problem.

How long has this problem been running for

Any BSOD crashes or other errors please in that time.

When I look for the optical drive TEAC CD-224E I do not see any drivers for it. I see for samsung, sony, and another type. Am I looking for the wrong thing? Sorry for my ignorance. Thank you for your time and attention.

Clean boot it pls
Start normal mode
Follow the manual method

Please do not go further then up to and including step 3.

When you reboot after setting clean boot, please test the CD then and if that is OK pls test the internet connection

After following your instructions my wifi connection still says (unsecured) but connected with an excellent signal strength. It does not actually connect since I cannot even go to www.google.com. As far as the DVD-ROM goes it does not play either. I hear it running but the image is frozen on the screen.

Having done that please go back to F8 and this time boot to Safe Mode with networking.
Test the DVD drive - you say before it worked in Safe Mode - was that just Safe Mode - if so it will very likely fail.

If it does go to the Dell site please download the latest wirless driver on offer there.

If you look at your present driver for the wireless - you may find that it is not this.
I have recently encountered a problem where a driver update was offered on Microsoft updates and caused a problem which was rsolved as soon as the manufacturers driver was reinstalled.

You MAY find that Roll Back driver on the Wireless may work - this will be easier. If that does not work and remember to reboot then go to Dell.
Roll back driver is on Device Manager under Network Devices. Double click the wirless then the driver tab.

Do this please while I examine the event viewer.

Upon trying a cd on the DVD-ROM while in Safe Mode with Networking the DVD did not work. Also there are no drivers to roll back on the pc. I cannot find the driver for the Broadcom networking card on the dell site, can I download it from somewhere else?

It is reasonably safe to presume that as Safe Mode worked for the CD and Sfae Mode with networking and clean boot did not that the Network card driver or the winsock settings are causing the issue.

Can you send me that Event Viewer log I asked for pls
