I have recently had a virus that caused a fake virus-cleaning program pop up (I don't remember the exact name, but it was MS something) and disabled many of the actual programs. Setting my computer back to a previous restore point got rid of that, but there has been a lingering problem where an Internet Exporer Script Error box pops up referencing two different urls ("http://ui.mevio.com/...dex.js?r=38312" and "http://nearlythenews..._medium=2a316b"). Also, occasionally an audio ad starts playing even if no IE window is open.

I've run a number of differenet spyware and virus programs - Spyware S&D, MalwareBytes, Trojan Remover and Norton AntiVirus -- and removed some files, but the script error persists. Each time I run them now, they don't find anything but cookies. I've attached the Hijak This results as well. Please Help!

Hi there Hijackthis no longer provides sufficient data to work with

Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop.

Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it

Posted Image
Click the "Scan" button to start scan

Posted Image
On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply

THEN

Download OTL to your Desktop
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click on Minimal Output at the top
  • Click on Scan all users
  • Download the following file scan.txt to your Desktop. Click here to download it. You may need to right click on it and select "Save"
  • Double click inside the Custom Scan box at the bottom
  • A window will appear saying "Click Ok to load a custom scan from a file or Cancel to cancel"
  • Click the Ok button and navigate to the file scan.txt which we just saved to your desktop
  • Select scan.txt and click Open. Writing will now appear under the Custom Scan box
  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time and post them in your topic

OK then I will need to expand the search area for this miscreant - But, first lets get the big boy out. Do all of this in normal mode please

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

THEN

Run OTL with the following settings

[*]Select All Users
[*]Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

netsvcs
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
/md5start
explorer.exe
winlogon.exe
Userinit.exe
svchost.exe
/md5stop
%systemroot%\*. /mp /s
hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /rs
CREATERESTOREPOINT

[*]Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

I'm having issues even using the ComboFix. I've disabled all antivirus and anti spyware software, to the point of uninstalling Norton temporarily just to make sure the processes weren't running. After giving me the disclaimermessage at the beginning, I click Yes and a blue window with a blinking cursor pops up and that's it. It freezes up and I have to restart the computer. I've tried redownloading it and leaving it running while I was at work, but nothing chaged. The blue window was still there when I got back.

Is there another program that I could use?

OK I think I know what is causing that - two programmes for you to use. The first is fairly fast - if it finds nothing then proceed to the second programme. If it finds anything related to MBR then let it fix it and try combofix again

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.

    Posted Image

  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.

    Posted Image

  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.

    Posted Image

  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.

    Posted Image

  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

IF THAT FINDS NOTHING

Download AVPTool from Here to your desktop

Run the programme you have just downloaded to your desktop (it will be randomly named )

First we will run a virus scan

On the first tab select all elements down to Computer and then select start scan
Once it has finished select report and post that.

Posted Image

Do not close AVPTool or it will self uninstall, if it does uninstall - then just rerun the setup file on your desktop

Now an analysis scan

Select the Manual Disinfection tab
Press the Gather System Information button
Once done Open the last report saved folder then attach the zip file to your next post zip
The file is located at C:\Users\your name\Desktop\Virus Removal Tool\setup_9.0.0.722_05.01.2011_20-34\LOG\avptool_sysinfo.zip

Ok, so the problem has gone from bad to worse.

The first program that you suggested wouldn't start at all once I downloaded it, so I tried the second one. It ran and searched about 47%, finding Virus.Win32.tdss.e, a bad file at windows/system32/drivers/udsnap.sys and MEM: Rootkit.Win32.sst.a. After only searcing that much it suggested a disenfection process that requred a reboot and now it is in a constant reboot loop, with a blue screen popping up saying something along the lines of it was restarting to protect the computer.

I'm replying now on a different computer, so please say there's something I can do about this without completely wiping the computer and losing all of my files.

Thanks,
Dan

When the computer restarts immediately press F8 continuously to enter the safe mode menu

Once there select safe mode with networking - let me know if that stops the loop

It actually gives me the option to start it in different modes each time it restarts. I've tried starting it in safe mode, sm w/ networking, and with the last good settings all of which came to the same blue screened result.

This is obviously a new and resilient version of TDL3

Do you have access to a cd burner so that we can work outside of windows ?

If so I will use OTLPE to replace the bad file windows/system32/drivers/udsnap.sys with a clean copy

Please print these instruction out so that you know what you are doing

Latest version: v3.1.46.0

OTLPENet.exe
MD5=79209302A1AFB2490808DB890A815CED
Size: 127,222,215b / 121.3MB

  • Download this scan.txt to a USB drive [attachment=49210:scan.txt]
  • Download OTLPENet.exe to your desktop
  • Ensure that you have a blank CD in the drive
  • Double click OTLPENet.exe and this will then open imgburn to burn the file to CD
  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
  • As the CD needs to detect your hardware and load the operating system, I would recommend a nice cup of tea whilst it loads :D

  • Your system should now display a Reatogo desktop.
Note : as you are running from CD it is not exactly speedy
  • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
  • Select the Windows folder of the infected drive if it asks for a location
  • When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
  • When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
  • Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
  • OTL should now start.
  • Double click the Custom scans and fixes box
  • In the dialogue locate the scan.txt you have on the USB
  • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
  • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
  • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system.
  • Right click the file and select send to : select the USB drive.
  • Confirm that it has copied to the USB drive by selecting it
  • You can backup any files that you wish from this OS
  • Please post the contents of the C:\OTL.txt file in your reply.

Ok. I'm up to step 8 of your directions, but can't find the OTLPE icon to click on. There's nothing but my computer and my network places on the Reatogo desktop. Should I be looking on the cd?

I was able to run OLTPE from the cd, but steps 9-12 didn't happen ...

(9.Select the Windows folder of the infected drive if it asks for a location
10.When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
11.When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
12.Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK)

... it seemed to only be scanning on the cd where it tried unsucsessfully to create the output text file.

Furthermore, after turning off the computer and restarting the os from the cd, an error message popped up -- Unexpected error (32768) occured at line 5199 in d:\xpsprtm\base\boot\setup\setup.c --- but it didn't stop the os from loading.

Does any of this ring a bell? Is there an options menu on OTL where I can direct it to look at the C drive?

Thanks for your help.
