Computer will not Boot

I have a Lenovo X 300 - it is running Windows 97 or used to. It will no longer open Windows. I just get a blinking cursor... I am running Avast - it came up with an error saying there was a Malware attack and then quit and has not worked since. I have tried changing the Boot Sequemce ... but cannot get the CD drive to boot. Can you tell me what the boot sequence should be to eitherr run the CD or the USB. Also, I have read several programs you can run from the USB to get accessz to Windows - but I am not sure which one I should be using for this virus. PLEASE HELP!
