I have been through EVERYTHING to try and get rid of this program. By watching processes, I can guess that when I end the process of the random file (currently it seems to be dtnwifz.exe), explorer causes nail.exe to run and generate a new randomly named file. If I delete nail.exe, the randomly named process regenerates it. I'm guessing it's something to do with that win.ini shell = explorer nail.exe, but I don't know if it's safe to delete/fix this, and I don't know where it refers to.

Whenever any antivirus/antispy software tries to remove it, I get a SpySweeper alert telling me about the addition to my registry of the new random file. I simply can't break out of the loop!

I'm fairly computer literate, but this is my first time using HJT. Please help! :tazz:

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please run Notepad and copy the following text into a new file:

Save the file to the desktop as remove.bat and make sure the "Save as type" field says "All files".

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on remove.bat. A window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Post the log from the scan here for me.

Then please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

Hey Jonny, thanks so much. I think the scourge has been defeated. I followed your advice and rebooted in safe mode, but discovered that that batch file didn't work for some reason - it couldn't find Nail. I ran Ewido and it found the aurora stuff again. Luckily, I had already downloaded Nailfix, and had that on my desktop, so I ran that too. Then I ran hijackthis and got rid of the things you mentioned, and finally manually checked that the bad files were gone. They were, so I rebooted and they're still gone, and Spy Sweeper hasn't told me about any new additions to my registry (finally!!).

Here's my Ewido and HJT reports. Bear in mind that the Ewido scan still found a lot of bad stuff, because the initial deletion attempt failed. I'm as sure as I can be that it's gone now though. I don't have time to run Ewido again until tonight.

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use) Click Here.

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox

2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats.
