Hi everyone!

OS: Windows Vista Home Edition
Antivirus: Avira AntiVirus was running
Browser: Surfing on Firefox 4.0 Private Mode when the attack occured
Screenshot of virus: http://www.avira.com...ral-police-scam

Ever since I got this virus (BKA-Trojan, http://www.bka.de/pr...1/pm110401.html - official notice from the German Federal Government), I reach the familiar Windows login screen and after I log in I see a (fake) notice stating that illegal videos and terrorist threats have been discovered on my PC, the police has therefore locked it, and I need to send EUR 100 (using some sort of voucher system, UKash) within 24 hours if I want to unlock it. No further action on my part is possible. A CTRL-ALT-DEL works, but see nothing when I click on Task-Manager. The only option is then to shutdown windows.

I have already done the following:

1. Rebooted, hoping it would go away. It didn't.

2. Restarted in Safe Mode with the possibility to type in commands. Got a command prompt, which I used to run a full system scan by Avira. The first run found 6 pieces of Malware which it claimed to have put in quarantine. A restart, however, showed the virus screen. Ran the anti-virus again (after a command line safe mode start) and this time it found no viruses. A restart was again unsuccessful.

3. Downloaded the Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 and burnt it onto a CD. Booted from the CD, was able to run the utility in text mode only. Ran various scans, multiple times, no virus reported, reboot still showed the virus screen.

4. Now have booted using an OTLPE CD, as suggested on this forum entry(in German, http://forum.avira.d...LPE CD ist okay). Have run the scan and have attached the OTL.txt and Extras.txt output files here.

What ought I to do next?

Will be very grateful for support.

Best,
D

Heya,

well isn't that an interesting move by the BKA. :D

Please try to run this fix with OTLPE and let me know if you can then log successfully into your PC:

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
    :otl
    O20 - HKU\admin_ON_C Winlogon: Shell - (C:\Users\admin\AppData\Local\Temp\9c0pwrrk.exe) - C:\Users\admin\AppData\Local\Temp\9c0pwrrk.exe (ds SOFTWIN Fas)
    :files
    C:\Windows\tasks\at*.job
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, when done it will say "Fix Complete press ok to open the log"
  • Please post that log in your next reply.

Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process.
If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTL\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.
================================Follow up scan=================================
  • Double click on OTL to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open one notepad window. OTL.Txt a This is saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of this file and post it with your next reply.

Hi there,

so, followed your instructions (thanks for replying!) - and here are the two log files. Copy/pasted instead of uploaded as suggested.

1. 04222011_121848.log - created after "Run Fix" and pasting your code snippet into "Custom Scans/Fixes".

Hi,

soory for the delay, I missed your last reply.

Do you still get the login warning about the BKA-trojan?

Hi there!

It works - I don't get that horrid trojan-screen anymore! I can also connect to the Internet. :D

(I had not logged in to my infected laptop, since my last post, in case more was needed to be done)

Many, many thanks!

Can I assume all is well? Does it make sense to run Avira (my antivrus) now?

Best,
dersrik

Hi,

yes, it makes sense. :D I would actually run a couple of scans on your PC before declaring that all is well. Even though the symptoms being gone is a good sign! :D

Please run a scan with Avira.

Please also run a scan with Malwarebytes:
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link
If you have a previous version of MBAM, remove it via Add/Remove Programs and download a fresh copy.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

Hi again,

so, I downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from the link at malwarebytes.org/mbam.php and ran a Quick Scan. No malware was detected.

------END MBAM LOG---------

One curious thing - the Avira full-system scan started by itself when I booted the (previously) infected laptop. I stopped it, and later restarted it. It claims to have found one "Hidden Object", though it doesn't say what the object is and what has been done with it. It says zero "finds", zero "suspect files", zero "warnings". It's still running - if it finds something OR if I find that "normal" running of the laptop is no longer possible, I will post it here.

If all is well (and I hope it is!) then this thread can be closed, I guess, but not before I thank you once again for your helpful advice. :D

Regards,

Hi,

hidden object can have a lot of harmless origins. If that's the only thing it found then there is little to worry about.

Please update your java and your adobe reader to prevent future reinfections:
Your version of Adobe Reader is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Adobe components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Adobe Reader Version X. and save it to your desktop.
  • Uncheck the "Free McAfee Security plan Plus" option or any other Toolbar you are offered
  • Click the download button at the bottom.
  • If you use Internet Explorer and do not wish to install the ActiveX element, simply click on the click here to download link on the next page.
  • Remove all older version of Adobe Reader: Go to Add/remove and uninstall all versions of Adobe Reader, Acrobat Reader and Adobe Acrobat.
If you are unsure of how to use Add or Remove Programs, the please see this tutorial:How To Remove An Installed Program From Your Computer
  • Then from your desktop double-click on Adobe Reader to install the newest version.
If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the "Adobe Setup - Welcome" window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • Once the installation is finished, open Adobe Reader and accept the warranty if prompted.
  • Click on Help and select Check for Updates.
  • A window will open and Adobe will check for Updates. If any updates are found to be available click on Download.
  • Once the update is downloaded you will get a system notification telling you so. Click on the popup to restore the window.
  • In the window that opens click Install.
  • Once the update is done click Close.
Your Adobe Reader is now up to date!

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "JDK 6 Update 25 (JDK or JRE)"
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u25-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Thanks - have updated Java (had previously updated Adobe).

Could not update Java previously (before the attack) as it kept complaining about a file conflict. Ignored it (and left it unupdated).

Now, uninstalled older versions of Java, as you suggested, and installed the latest one.

Thanks again :D

Hope you too have a sunndy day!

Hi,

hope you had a happy break for easter! :D

As a final step please remove the tools we used:
Read those last few lines, in order to keep your pc safe and clean:
Please do the following to clean up your PC:
  • Delete the tools used during the disinfection:
    • Download OTC from the following mirrors and save it to your desktop:
    • Double click on Posted Image
    • Push the large "Cleanup" button.
    • Allow your system to reboot.
  • If OTC faild to remove all programs from your Desktop, please delete the rest manually.
  • Disable and Enable System Restore.
You can find instructions on how to disable and reenable system restore here:
    Windows ME System Restore Guide
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
    Windows Vista System Restore Guide

Note: You should only do this once, not on a regular basis!
You will not be able to restore computer to any earlier than today!

Please read these advices, in order to prevent reinfecting your PC:

  • Install and update the following programs regularly:
    • an outbound firewall
A comprehensive tutorial and a list of possible firewalls can be found here.
    • an AntiVirus Software
It is imperative that you update your AntiVirus Software on regular basis. If you do not update your AntiVirus Software then it will not be able to catch the latest threats.
    • an Anti-Spyware program
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
    • Spyware Blaster
A tutorial for Spywareblaster can be found here. If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
    • MVPs hosts file
A tutorial for MVPs hosts file can be found here. If you would like automatic updates you might want to take a look at HostMan host file manager. For more information on thehosts file, and what it can do for you, please consult the Tutorial on the Hosts file
  • Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holeswill allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.
Therefore, please, visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!
  • Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on yourmachine.
  • Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variantsevery single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing :D.
