Hello,

I have acquired this windows xp security virus/malware from I believe Hulu.com. I do not recall clicking on anything to acquire it. However, it was not caught by AVG. Over 2-3 days it progressed from turning off sound deep in windows (don't recall where I went to get that back) to not allowing any internet access, only directing to their phoney "scan". I found 2010 data elsewhere and went into the registry deleting entries. This allowed me to have some features. I opened in safe mode and followed some other instructions changing windows H_Key settings purported to solved the win32 error. I had also attempted to update Windows XP SP2. Upon reboot I get a "Win 32 Generic Host Error". I have had sporadic internet since then and have attempted various things found on the internet.

I have done an "sfc/scannow" with a windows XP SP2 disk, run malwarebytes software about 3 times between various cleaning attempts.
I have SP3 loaded now from a CD but I was still having the win32 error.
I found on these forums to change malwarebytes to a ".com" file so it would update and ran this again after update. I have now rebooted, fortunately have internet, but still have the win32 error. AVG was moving some files to their virus vault as the Malwarebytes scan ran on this last time in regular windows mode.

The other symptom besides the "win32 generic host" error is that it opens a window to access the windows file and the themes file is there but not open.

I would GREATLY appreciate the help!!

Let the program run unhindered, OTL will reboot the PC when it is done. Save the log and copy and paste it to a reply.

Open OTL again and select either the All option in the Extra Registry group then the Run Scan button. Post the two logs it produces in your next reply.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
* The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
* Post that log back here.

Uninstall AVG 9. It is obsolete anyway and will interfere with Combofix. Download and run the AVG removal tool after you uninstall it.
Install the free Avast:

Once you have it installed and it has updated:
Click on the Avast ball. Then click on Scan Computer, then on
Boot-Time Scan then on Settings. Change the Ask at the bottom to Move to Chest. OK then Schedule Now. Reboot and let it run a scan. It may take hours.
Once it finishes it should load windows.

Before running Combofix, Click on the Avast ball. Additional Protection, Auto Sandbox, Settings, then uncheck Enable Auto Sandbox. Close the Avast User Interface and right click on the Avast Ball and select Avast! Shields Control, Disable until Computer is Restarted, Yes.


ComboFix

A caution - Do not run Combofix more than once. Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

A file will be created at => C:\Combofix.txt. I'll need to see that in your reply.

Download TDSSKiller:

Save it to your desktop then double click to run it.

If TDSSKiller alerts you that the system needs to reboot, please consent.

Hello,

I was looking at another thread on this virus and just trying things. I had already run malwarebytes. I then tried the DrWeb program (from a free post 2 threads down from mine) and I BELIEVE it is now cured. DrWeb found a number of items. This is the first time I have rebooted since the quick scan and full scan from DrWeb after I posted this...it took from 1pm yesterday until now to finish all that. I have logs saved in case something does not work.

I will re-post the OTL if I run into any more difficulties.
