Hello Bhinsz84,

Nothing there. There is an old problem with Windows XP Professional that used to happen with the Security Center. The solution was to install the latest Service Pack. I am wondering if there has been some corruption caused by infection that can be solved by a re-install of SP3.

You will need to uninstall SP3 first.

To uninstall SP3

  • Click Start > Control Panel >Add or Remove Programs
  • Click Windows XP Service Pack 3
  • Click Remove
If that doesn't work, try going to this link:

How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 3

Then reinstall SP3 (Service Pack 3) Here's the link for SP3 download

Link: http://www.softwarep...ice-pack-3.html

Care: Do not install SP3 on systems with AMD chips unless a special hotfix has been applied first. See Important notes in the link.

Come back and tell me how you got on. :)

uninstalled sp3 - computer did not like that very much. froze up in the middle of removal - manual reboot. upon restart i cannot get to web pages - opened up cmd and ran ipconfig i still have connectivity - just cant send / recieve. I can still connect and pull files off of the one with the virus and send them to another computer though. tried renewing the ip as well. there are a few more things i can try but I am leaving town for the weekend and wont be back until sunday.

Thank you again for your help on this - have a good weekend.

Hmm...

there are a few more things i can try but I am leaving town for the weekend and wont be back until sunday.

Have a good trip.

When you get back...

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections. Then right-click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using dial-up, and left-click on the Properties option. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says "Obtain DNS servers automatically". Click OK twice, and restart your computer.

Go to Start > Run.... In the Open: field type cmd and press the OK button. This will open a Command Prompt.
Type or copy & paste the contents inside the Code box below into the command window:

ipconfig /flushdns

Hit Enter and exit the Command Prompt.

If that does'nt make a difference do this:

Go to Start > Run and type: devmgmt.msc . Press OK, now Device Manager should open.

Expand the Network adapters.

Right click the items listed and choose uninstall. (There can be one, two or even three devices.)

Reboot your computer now, the network adapters should be installed automatically at reboot.

Come back and tell me if there has been any change.

Hi Bhinsz84,

Try downloading SP3 to a flash drive and transfering to the sick machine.

Use this link to download SP3:

http://www.microsoft...&displaylang=en

Disregard the information for use on multiple network computers.

Read this for information about what to do before installing SP3:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717

After that see if that has made any difference to your connection problem.

Hello Bhinsz84,

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > then right click on Command Prompt and Run As Administrator (Vista and Win7) or double-click on Command Prompt (XP).

Type in the following:

netsh interface ip show config (note the gaps, they should be there)

Copy and paste the contents of the window back here.

To do this, right click on the Command Prompt bar and go to Edit > Mark and drag the curser to highlight the text. Then go to Edit > Copy and copy to notepad. You may need to use Ctrl V to copy. Post back here.

Please open Notepad.

Copy (Ctrl +C) and paste (Ctrl +V) the text in the code box below to Notepad.

net start >> look.txt
ipconfig /all >> look.txt
notepad look.txt

Save it to your desktop as File name: look.bat Save as type: All Files

Double click look.bat to run it. A command window will open briefly, then close. This is quite normal.

Please post the contents of look.txt in your next reply.
