So, my computer crashes on almost every single video game I have installed on it. This list includes WoW, Starcraft 2, Fallout 3, and Rift. The only game it has never crashed on is Torchlight for some reason. All games as well as my OS are legit. Here are my specs-

Hard drive: Seagate ST3500418AS Barracuda 7200.12 Hard Drive - 3.5", 7200 RPM, SATA 3G, 500GB, 16MB Cache, OEM

RAM: Corsair XMS2 4GB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz Memory Upgrade - 2x2048MB

Graphics card: Diamond 5670PE51G Radeon HD 5670 Video Card - 1024MB DDR5, PCI-Express 2.0, DVI, VGA, HDMI

CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 255 Dual Core Processor ADX255OCGQBOX - 3.00GHz, Socket AM3, 2MB Cache, 2000MHz (4000 MT/s), Retail

Power Supply: Thermaltake TR2 600W

At first I thought that it might be crashing because my MOBO isnt up to snuff, but now I'm looking into the RAM and graphics card and am becoming suspicious of the RAM. I just ran a memorytest I found built into Win7 but nothing came up at defective. I also just uninstalled and reinstalled my drivers. Is there anything else that could be wrong with my computer?? This is really driving me crazy and I would appreciate any help.

This is my first build. Everything seems to work perfectly except for when I play video games, so I'm not sure if the way I put it together is making any difference.

Please follow the steps below to enter the Event Viewer program in Vista\Win7. This will give me more information into what is causing your issue. You can get to Event viewer two ways and I will post both for you.

It is possible that your GFX card is overheating, how many internal case fans do you have and what size are they?
Download and run Speedfan from http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php post a screenshot of the readings with your next reply so that your temps and voltages can be checked, stress test your video card with Furmark http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/ let us know the results.

rshaffer, I followed your instructions but I wasnt prompted to do anything. I think I found what you were talking about in the Event Viewer. Here it is-



Philpower, I'm using two fans, excluding my cpu and graphics card fan. I'm not sure of their size, but they seem to be fairly large. I downloaded the software from http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php but the thing that ended up downloading was called driver perfomer and it didnt seem to do anything. I'm using windows 7 64 bit and Furmark is only available for 32bit.

Click Analyze
It will want to download the Debugger and install it Say Yes
WhoCrashed will create report but you have to scroll down to see it

This might be a case of memory corruption. More often memory corruption happens because of software errors in buggy drivers, not because of faulty RAM modules.

As I thought. This is not being caused by faulty memory but by a third party driver.
Lets check the OS and chkdsk.

Go to

Start and then to Run
Type in Chkdsk /r Note the space between k and /
Click Enter ...It will probably ask if you want to do this on the next reboot...click Y
If the window doesn't shutdown on its own then reboot the system manually. On reboot the system will start the chkdsk operation
This one will take longer then chkdsk /f

Note... there are 5 stages...
It may appear to hang at a certain percent for a hour or more or even back up and go over the same area...this is normal...
DO NOT SHUT YOUR COMPUTER DOWN WHILE CHKDSK IS RUNNING OR YOU CAN HAVE SEVERE PROBLEMS
This can take several hours to complete.
When completed it will boot the system back into windows.

Reboot after your done running chkdsk /r...
then Go to Start...Run and type: eventvwr.msc press Enter
When Event Viewer opens, click on Applications... then scroll down to [b]Winlogon]/b] and double-click on it. This is the log created after running Checkdisk...copy and paste the log back here

So, I've been trying to run the chkdsk, but it wont run. Every time I type it in and press enter a black box with white text pops up on my screen for a split second and then disappears. Is there any other way to open it? I feel like we're so close to solving this problem

actually, nevermind. I think I figured it out. I'm about to restart my computer. Once its back, I'll let you know whats the log says

I ran chkdsk. I found winlogon and double clicked it but nothing came up. Underneath 'number of events' it says 0. Did I do the chkdsk wrong, you think?

Go Start and then to Run ("Start Search" in Vista),
Type in: sfc /scannow
Click OK (Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) finds any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD.
If sfc does not find any errors in Windows XP, it will simply quit, without any message.
In Vista you will receive the following message: "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations".

For Vista users ONLY: Navigate to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder. You'll see CBS.log file.
Usually, it's pretty big file, so upload it to Flyupload, and post download link.


If you don't have Windows CD....
This applies mostly to Windows XP, since Vista rarely requires use of its DVD while running "sfc"
Note This method will not necessarily work as well, as when using Windows CD, because not always ALL system files are backed up on your hard drive. Also, backed up files may be corrupted as well.

Go Start and then Run
type in regedit and click OK


Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

You will see various entries Values on the right hand side.

The one we want is called: SourcePath

It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive, usually D and that is why it is asking for the XP CD.
All we need to do is change it to: C:
Now, double click the SourcePatch setting and a new box will pop up.
Change the drive letter from your CD drive to your root drive, usually C:
Close Registry Editor.

Now restart your computer and try sfc /scannow again!

Do you have a valid XP CD?

If so, place it in your CD ROM drive and follow the instructions below:

• Click on Start and select Run... type sfc /scannow (note the space) (Let this run undisturbed until the window with the blue progress bar goes away)

SFC - Which stands for System File Checker,
retrieves the correct version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.
If you want to see what was replaced, right-click My Computer and click on Manage. In the new window that appears, expand the Event Viewer (by clicking on the + symbol next to it) and then click on System.

OK I'm going to backup just a sec and ask you to do what Phill suggested in his post.

Download Speedfan (The download link is to the right), and install it. Once it's installed, run the program and post here the information it shows.
The information I want you to post is the stuff that is circled in the example picture I have attached.
To make sure we are getting all the correct information it would help us if you were to attach a screenshot like the one below of your Speedfan results.

To do a screenshot please have click on your Print Screen on your keyboard.

• It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
• Now go to Start and then to All Programs
• Scroll to Accessories and then click on Paint
• In the Empty White Area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
• Go to the File option at the top and click on Save as
• Save as file type JPEG and save it to your Desktop
