wont pull up desktop, goes black.

I have an inspiron 6000 laptop and my boyfriend left it on all day sitting on the couch. When I got home from work it was so hot I could barely touch it and turned it off and let it cool.
I turned it on a few hours later and the dell logo comes up and then it goes to a lit black screen and never pulls up my desktop screen. Ive tried doing safe mode and rebooting from the "last known configuration" but doesnt do anything.

Anyone have any idea what this could be?
