after windows update network adapter problems

Approximately May 1st our computer did an automatic update afterwards our internet connection would not work. Called ATT they said that our connection was good. Performed system restore went back 3 days and internet worked. 3 days later same problem. Deleted updates and did another system restore and is now fixed!? I have also turned off automatic updates. How can I be sure that this won't happen again in another 3 days? Windows troubleshooting indicated that network adapter driver is the problem without internet connection we can't download the driver. Should we update driver now or without the update should we be alright?
