OK could I have a fresh OTL log please from the system running in normal mode

The pci.sys file was compromised and I believe the attempted repair by Avast failed for some reason or other

Try this :) Also what problems are apparent now

Download OTL to your Desktop
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Select All Users
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    Userinit.exe
    svchost.exe
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /rs
    hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /64 /rs
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Post both logs

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [EMPTYFLASH]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Posted Image Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application.

Upgrading Java:
  • Go to this site and click Do I have Java
  • It will check your current version and then offer to update to the latest version

SPRING CLEAN

To manually create a new Restore Point

  • Go to Control Panel and select System
  • Select System
  • On the left select System Protection and accept the warning if you get one
  • Select System Protection Tab
  • Select Create at the bottom
  • Type in a name i.e. Clean
  • Select Create

Now we can purge the infected ones

  • GoStart > All programs > Accessories > system tools page
  • Select Performance Information and Tools
  • Right click Disc cleanup an select run as administrator
  • Select Your main drive and accept the warning if you get one
  • For a few moments the system will make some calculations
  • Select the More Options tab
  • In the System Restore and Shadow Backups select Clean up
  • Select Delete on the pop up
  • Select OK
  • Select Delete

Final stretch

Download and run Puran Disc Defragmenter
For the first run I would recommend a boot defrag and disk check

Posted Image

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Posted Image Malwarebytes. Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide How did I get infected in the first place ?
Keep safe :)

Hi, cleaning up.

After RUN FIX it asked me if I wanted to reboot and I said OK but it did not reboot. I waited 10 mins and then rebooted nyself. I then ran CLEANUP and it asked me if I wanted to Reboot I said OK and for the past 20 mins it is sitting at Processing deleteself??? Should I reboot myself?

Another question - on an ongoing basis I would like to clean my temp files/registry etc. what is the best way to do that? I would like to have a list which I go through every month to cleanup and remove any bits or pieces hanging about plus maybe do a system image so that if I have to restore. You know general health check and good housekeeping.

Thank you.

Yes reboot yourself

For housekeeping I use TFC fairly regularly

Clear Cache/Temp Files
Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop
  • Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

An image routine is very good - then if anything untoward does occur then just replace the image - 15 minutes later all is good again

Never touch the registry, there is no need as it does not affect the performance in any way

A monthly defrag is also good

Another problem. I closed OTL and then shout down. The system gave me a message . . . system updates being applied . . . this normal (I have Windows 7) it applid the updates and then shut down. I restarted and it got stuck on . . . Windows profile being update. Do not shut down . . 0% processed . . . . it kept sitting there for sometime and then said . . . Windows updates being rolled back. Error. . . . and then the system came back up.

While I wait for your response I will continue with the your cleanup list.
