Please help!!
my boyfriends laptop had a virus come up "windows 7 security" or something along those lines and I opened task manager to find the file location and I permanently deleted it through the recycling bin.
Now no programs will open up as it doesn't know what to open with (comes up with "open with" message and the only program there is internet explorer which isn't opening up itself), so no internet browser and no regedit.exe, winrar.exe etc.

The original windows security 7 message no longer opens up.
Please help! I don't know if it was the virus that did the damage or me deleting the wrong file and what should I do????

Many thanks!!!

Hi there panic not, help is at hand :)

This file is not an exe so it should run quite happily

Download OTL to your Desktop
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Select All Users
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    Userinit.exe
    svchost.exe
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /rs
    hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /64 /rs
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Post both logs
