May 6 or 7 I got hit with a blue background and the smitfraud messsage
along with losing the "Display" tabs and restore points prior to and a week
or so later than those dates.
(this was in spite of XP-Pro SP2 and McAfee ver 8 "on access" scan)
About a week ago the blue screen and message disappeared and my tabs
came back. (I thought maybe the condition may have timed-out)
I downloaded Ad-Aware SE and ran it and thought everything was now ok.
I'm still having some odd problems, so someone directed me to your website
where I got thoroughly alarmed.
I followed your "do this first" instructions and have run- cleanup, cwshredder,
your sugestions on Lavasoft, along with ewido.
I'm attaching the Hijack This log and hope that you could tell me if I'm clean.
I'm having problems trying to set up a wireless high speed connection
(which may only be my incompetence), but I'd like to be sure before I ask
my provider for help.
Thanks very much for any help

Hi Der4540,

You have a few host file entries pertaining to armacell / armanet. Are these names familiar to you?? I am leaving these untouched as of now. If you dont recognise them then we will remove them later.

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

1. Download files

Download these files and save them in a directory on your desktop.
1. Smitfraud Reg
2. DelDomains
3. CleanUp!
DO NOT RUN THESE PROGRAMS YET.

2. Correct the Registry

Locate "smitfraud.reg" and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merged successfully" prompt then follow the rest of the instructions below.

3. Uninstall Rogue Programs

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

*IMPORTANT*CLICK THIS LINK TO LEARN HOW TO VIEW HIDDEN FILES

4. Delete the Rogue files

Restart the PC in Safe Mode. While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Make sure you can view hidden files.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following, if found, (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way)

FOLDERS to delete (in bold) if found:

C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard

While still in Safe Mode, do the following:

5. Fix using Hijack This

Make sure all programs and windows are closed. Run HiJackThis and place a check next to the following items, if found, then click FIX CHECKED:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.quicknavi...earch.php?qq=%1

Close HiJackThis.

Using Windows explorer delete the following files, if found -

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpB95D.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wldr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\btxppanel.dll

Reboot into normal mode.

5. Clean Up the PC

We will now use the files downloaded at Step 1.

1.) RIGHT-CLICK DelDomains.inf on your desktop and select: Install (no need to restart)

2.) Run Clean Up and delete all temporary files including temporary internet files.

3.) Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan.

To: tampabelle; thanks for the help :tazz: (been out of town)
I have followed (hopefully) your instructions and am attaching the
Activescan log and the HijackThis log.
1. the Armacell/Armanet entries are a known safe corp website.
2. I'm using "mozilla firefox" as my web browser except for trying to log-in as
adminastrator to set up our "Bell Canada" hosted website where I must use IE
- I am unable to log in and their help desk thinksIi must have some problem
regarding "Active-X" controls (another computer here can log on ok), could this
be a result of the(se) virus removing registry info ??
Thanks Again

Can you post a fresh Hijack This log also ??

A lot of times IE doesnt work properly becos the settings prohibit accepting / running of Active X components.

Let us get rid of the malware and then we can look at the IE settings also.

sorry....I was sure I had correctly attached the HJT log but it isn't there.
Going to try this again

p.s. after my last posting to you this am, I temporarily lowered my
cookies and download security settings and either that or your help in
virus removal enabled me to log-in successfully
MANY THANKS

Hi Der4540,

Your log is clean. :tazz:

Regarding the IE security levels, please note that you should have atleast "
MEDIUM" level set. Otherwise you would be vulnerable to infection.

Let us just make sure that these files are not there on your PC. Please delete these files, if found on your PC (If they are not found, it is good).

C:\wp.exe
C:\wp.bmp
C:\bsw.exe
C:\Windows\sites.ini
C:\Windows\popuper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\wldr.dll
C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmon.exe
C:\Windows\System32\shnlog.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\Windows\system32\msole32.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\perfcii.ini
D:\My Documents\Your Scanner.url
I want you to remove last traces of malware which might be hideen in the system restore files by taking these steps -

System Restore Points
Since your PC is currently clean, create a system restore point. A system restore would enable you to revert to the settings on the PC when the restore point was created. It is also a good idea to flush all earlier system restore points which may be containing infected files.

A. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

B. Restart your computer.

C. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

Please report any observations, including files found and deleted.
