error applying win7 update

I recently downloaded service pack one for windows 7 64 bit. when I restarted my computer it goes to the screen where the windows 7 logo pops up and below it it says applying update. it gets stuck and says error on one of the updates and doesn't continue. I then tried to boot in safe mode to get rid of the update and when safe mode try to boot up it gets stuck on one of the processes so it wont boot up in safe mode either. Any help is appreciated thank you.
