Hi,

I have this problem that will appear every few days: my mouse will freeze & I can't do anything except forcing the PC to reboot (keyboard and Ctrl+Alt+Del also not working, the PC is freezing). Sometimes it become blue screen. I also unable to save any of my Microsoft Word document (but other Microsoft office is working perfectly. I googled & someone said that it might be hardware problem.

I checked the hardware, under Device Manager there's a missing "SM Bus Controller"

How do I get the SM Bus Controller? And is it true it's because of Hardware problem?

Thank you.

Laptop or Desktop?
Name brand and if so what make and model?
If custom build what is the make and model of the motherboard?
What you are missing seems to be the motherboard chipset driver.
The above info will help me to find the correct driver.
Did you by chance get a drivers cd with your system?

Did you by chance get a drivers cd with your system? I probably have. I never throw any driver CD given to me.

That is the serial number I believe.
Try this:

Download and install Free Everest Home Edition
Open it.
1: In left pane expand Computer folder.
2: Click once on Summary
3: In upper menu, go Report
4: And then to Quick Report-Summary
5: Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Click the + by computer, click on Sensor. Get a screenshot and post it so I can check your temps and voltages...

DO NOT INCLUDE ANYTHING UNDER THE LINE THAT SAYS "DEBUG- PCI"

Go HERE and it should detect your chipset and either give you the link to the driver or automatically download and install it.
Let me know if it works.

Hi rsaffer61,

Thank you so much. It works. I don't see any missing SM Bus controller.

However, I still can't save my doc (Word). Is it because of the same problem? How can I fix this?

Thanks again.

Nope that is a different issue completely.
What you have done so far is just correct a driver problem. Now we start on the program issue.
You stated you sometimes get a BSOD so lets see if they will show us what is up.
Download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

Thanks to Broni for the instructions and program

By the way, today after I started up, my mouse was frozen again & I had to force restart. After I force to do reboot, then my screen goes blank (in black screen), which forced me to do another reboot. Luckily this time it ran normally.

Another problem that I just find out that I can't see anything under "Add and Remove Program". It's just blank. I was suspecting the black screen might be due to the new program (RemoveIT Pro v7 Ultra) which sometimes quarantine some file. So, I wanted to uninstall it, but alas...I can't even see anything on my Add/Remove Program.

I feel that I had done so much abuse to my computer. :)

OK the other 3 in the log are from last year and I'm only going to worry about the most recent one which was this year for now. Main areas I am looking at are highlighted.

Now a explanation of the bug check code.

0x000000EA: THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER
(Click to consult the online Win XP Resource Kit article.)
A device driver problem has caused the system to pause indefinitely (hang). Typically, this is caused by a display driver waiting for the video hardware to enter an idle state. This might indicate a hardware problem with the video adapter, or a faulty video driver.

Short form it is saying the display driver is a problem and needs to be upgraded. It can also indicate a failing video card but I don't think so at this point. Lets work on making sure you have the newest driver first by going HERE
Donwload it and save it to your desktop for the next steps. Once you have it then you will need to update your current driver. You will do this in Device Manger and find your Display Adapter. Right click on it and then click on update. When it asks where to look point it to the file you just downloaded on your desktop.

I can't make the Display Adapter to find the specific file that I've downloaded.

Here are the steps that I've done:
1. Display Adapter
2. Right click on NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT & choose "Update Driver"
3. Click "No, not this time" when the computer asked "Can Windows connect to Windows Update to search for software?", next
4. Choose "Install from a list of specific location (Advanced)", next
5. Choose "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install
6. It install (I can't choose the specific file)
7. I restarted my PC as per request

I've also done these steps:
1-4. Same as above
5. I tick "Include this location in the search", click Browse
6. I can click to Desktop, but the "OK" button is frozen & I can't click the file I want

so I exit.

The auto-default for "Include this location in the search:" is "C:\\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS"

Shall I just copy the downloaded file unto that folder? Will that make the step works?

Choose "Install from a list of specific location (Advanced)", next

At this step then browse and choose the Desktop if that is where the driver is located.
Then click Next
Does that work then?
BTW when it does install you really won't know until we're done and I have you run a new pc pit stop report. :)
