Go Here for Nvidia drivers
Supply the requested information in the drop down windows. It will scan your system and then should give you the newest driver for your video card. Download\Install that and then it should prompt you to reboot.
If not I suggest you do just to make sure the changes take affect.

Anyway, I went to nvidia website & look for my driver "GeForce 8500GT". I hope this is the driver you meant?

Yep exactly and if you come up with the same driver I did then we will have to take further steps to completely uninstall the currently installed driver and start fresh with the newest driver.

Ok, I have installed the driver. It's the same driver with what you gave me. But this time, I didn't install/update through Device Manager, but just double click on the file. The file runs & check & update the drivers.

I hope these steps are correct...

That is what I was wondering if it would self install. Good job figuring that out.
Hopefully that will take care of that problem.
Now on to the mouse. Is this a ps2 or usb mouse?
If neither is it a wireless mouse?
Have you tried a different mouse?

It's a 3D optical mouse with USB connection. I bought this mouse because my previous mouse creates more problems (means = more freezes) & sometimes it will display "Unknown device has been connected" or "Unknown device has been disconnected" continually.

My mouse brand is SOAI. For a couple months it works well, until it began to have problems again. I notice that when I move to plug the USB at the front part rather than back part, the freeze don't happen so often.

OK lets check the System Files and see if a USB controller may not be working correctly.

Go Start and then to Run ("Start Search" in Vista),
Type in: sfc /scannow
Click OK (Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) finds any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD.
If sfc does not find any errors in Windows XP, it will simply quit, without any message.
In Vista you will receive the following message: "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations".

For Vista users ONLY: Navigate to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder. You'll see CBS.log file.
Usually, it's pretty big file, so upload it to Flyupload, and post download link.

If you don't have Windows CD....
This applies mostly to Windows XP, since Vista rarely requires use of its DVD while running "sfc"
Note This method will not necessarily work as well, as when using Windows CD, because not always ALL system files are backed up on your hard drive. Also, backed up files may be corrupted as well.

Go Start and then Run
type in regedit and click OK

Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

You will see various entries Values on the right hand side.

The one we want is called: SourcePath

It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive, usually D and that is why it is asking for the XP CD.
All we need to do is change it to: C:
Now, double click the SourcePatch setting and a new box will pop up.
Change the drive letter from your CD drive to your root drive, usually C:
Close Registry Editor.

Now restart your computer and try sfc /scannow again!

Thanks to Broni for the instructions

Revised and Simplified:

Do you have a valid XP CD?

If so, place it in your CD ROM drive and follow the instructions below:
  • Click on Start and select Run... type sfc /scannow (note the space) (Let this run undisturbed until the window with the blue progress bar goes away)

SFC
- Which stands for System File Checker,
retrieves the correct version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.
If you want to see what was replaced, right-click My Computer and click on Manage. In the new window that appears, expand the Event Viewer (by clicking on the + symbol next to it) and then click on System.

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply. Was working late yesterday, so only have time to continue the checking today.

As per your advice, I was doing your step 1:

While it was checking, it was asking for CD. After I inserted the CD & choose the option to "Check compatibility" it simply give the error message as per attached.

Then after that it continues to scan & closes by it self.

Yes, I do have valid XP CD, but I don't know why it says that the one I have is the newer version than the CD.

Then, after that I tried your simplified version. It didn't ask for CD again.
I will attach the Event Viewer as well.

Hi,

Sorry for so so late reply. Basically, after installing Nvidia update, the problem got worse. I even try to uninstall & re-install, but it didn't work. My PC hang 8x a day (which is actually happens within 3-4 hours after I reach home). Some of the days the monitor will just give me blue screen or blank screen. I was pretty upset & I can't do anything. Before I reply email, it will hang. That's one of the reason it took me few weeks to reply, because that whole week I can't do anything with my computer.

At the end my friend suggested me to reformat my PC. So he helped me with that & no problem after I reformat my HD. I still can't find what's the reason & how to actually to resolve the problem without reformat my HD. Anyway, I thank you & team for helping me so far. You guys are great.
