Terrible performance

Hello. I was on my computer and everything was just fine two days ago, when Norton suddenly popped up with something about a suspicious file. I had only really been on my email, facebook, and an MMO I play for those few days, and I hadn't received anything untrustworthy/etc, so this came OUT OF NOWHERE. The next day, my computer's performance was absolutely TERRIBLE, with my clicking the start button taking 2 minutes to load and USUALLY freezing so hard that although other open programs would work, I could not use the entire taskbar for the rest of my session. I eventually did an emergency shutdown and tried restarting. Twenty minutes into the "starting windows" screen I gave up, emergency shutdown-ed and reformatted my computer. The performance isn't AS bad, but something still feels wrong. I was in a skype call and everything was ok as I downloaded my MMO again - as soon as it completed and went in the "scanning for viruses" step that mozilla firefox does, everything went to [bleep] - my computer started lagging HORRIBLY, the call was dropped for ~30 seconds and picked back up for ~3, and that repeated about sixteen times, the lag was so awful that I couldn't type to my friend what was happening, and ten minutes later the virus scanning hadn't completed. I grabbed MBAM and ran a scan with nothing turning up, but things still don't quite feel right. Please help!
