Something that might help: *very* occasionally, I'll get a blue screen - i'll mention the display driver and one file in particular: atikmdag.sys.

Seemingly at random, not any specific action that I can pinpoint, but it generally shows up about once every 10-15 restarts.

Generally, most computer sessions go like this:

Most often - mouse will freeze briefly, screen will go black, and screen view will reappear without other freezing. This generally happens if I'm selecting a menu option/submenu in a program, or clicking a link on a webpage.

Sometimes - whole computer freezes, requiring a restart. This generally happens if I'm opening up a new program while I have one or two others actively open (and not simply sitting in the system tray). This also can happen if I'm actually looking at things in the system tray. However, it might be memory-related as the likelihood seems to go up the longer the computer is on.

Less often - whole computer freezes with huge graphical distortion, usually in a checkerboard pattern.

Even less often - about half the time with the checkerboard pattern, the computer will reboot itself after freezing. About a quarter of the time, before the computer reboots, it'll give me the BSOD with the atikmdag.sys message. As far as I can make out, most of the time the message is about how it tried to reset the display driver after timeout, but failed.

Constant: minor graphical corruption, almost like static, around window edges or icons here and there.

I did a little Googling about this and it can be any number of things -- memory corruption, driver corruption, etc. Thanks very much for sticking with me this far.

Rootkit Unhooker:

• Please download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your desktop.
• Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.

I also did 3 scans with Memtest86+, off of a formatted thumb drive. All passed. At this point, since it's the ATI driver, or card, or both that are causing the problem, is there some hope of saving the card, or should I just go ahead and replace it?

For the most part, I'm worried about the stability of the system -- I want to be able to get important files off of it (pictures, music files, resumes) and backed up if any really bad stuff starts to happen, seeing as how the behavior's gotten worse.

It is and it isn't. I was hoping that by removing all viral traces, or perhaps resolving the driver/card problem first, I might get it in an enough of a stable state to where I could back things up fairly easily.

Is what you're recommending next a drive reformat?

Correction: when I attempt to share out the folder with all the files in it that need backing up (C:/users/user folder) that immediately crashes the machine.

I tried reseating the card in its slot and that made things exponentially worse.

I've been unable to grab files off of the hard drive, since the system is even having a hard time booting now. I did some more googling about atikmdag.sys -- it looks like there are a number of things to check... overheating or defective mobo being a couple. Since memory tests have all come up OK, is the next thing to check the motherboard?
