I can't move it from the CD. I tried to upload it to the desktop, but there is no way do that. "Paste" is unavailable - it's grayed out. I can't right-click move or any other trick that I know.

You should be able to right-click on the exe file, choosee Copy, then right-click on the desktop and choose Paste. You can then rename it by right-clicking on it (on the desktop)

What I don't understand is why you downloaded it to a CD. Have you no Internet access with your computer?

The instructions only included the option to save to CD for those with no Internet access.

If you do have access, download it again using the same link and this time save it to your desktop.

Thanks

No. I have no internet access. I have no flash drive. I am working from another computer with limited access and limited permission.

I tried to cut and paste, copy and paste, right-click move - all to no avail. The best I can do is create a shortcut on the desktop, which is useless.

I came to this forum to get a solution. Now I have more problems than when I started.

Hi finnophile

I came to this forum to get a solution. Now I have more problems than when I started.

I can understand your frustration but this is not due to the forum but down to the malware on your computer.

We are volunteers who do this free of charge to help others, so please understand that we are trying to use our expertise to help you, unlike those who have caused this problem in the first place.

===================================================

Run RogueKiller

Let’s try RogueKiller again before having to resort to other options.

Download RogueKiller to the desktop of the uninfected computer.

While on the desktop, rename it to winlogon.exe as previously described.

===================================================

NEXT

===================================================

Download Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware

Click here and save it to the desktop of the uninfected computer

===================================================

Save both of those downloaded programs to CD

===================================================

On the infected computer

  • close all running programs
  • double-click on the renamed winlogon.exe
  • when prompted, type 1 and press Enter
  • the RKreport.txt will be generated next to the executable, (on the desktop).
  • If the program is blocked, do not hesitate to try several times.

Please post the contents of the RKreport.txt in your next Reply.

Remember: Do not reboot your computer if at all possible otherwise the malware will reactivate and you will have to run roguekiller again

===================================================

Run Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware

  • double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • at the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish..
  • if an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • when the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • when removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • the log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

NOTE: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Post back with the results

Thanks

First of all, my apologies to you.

I'm pulling my hair out and I was blaming someone other than myself for the bald spot :)

OK, I have a flash drive now. I will follow the above directions, except wherever the CD is mentioned I will use the flash drive instead.

BTW, I have Malwarebytes already.

Wish me luck.
