usb 3.0 is backwards compatible with usb 2.0. Can you elaborate on your "driver" what are you trying to do exactly? computer/specs/ device etc..

I was thinking of buy an external drive and the sales person said it was a USB 3.0. I know I have 2.0. If it is backwards compatible I imagine it would be at the slower speed.

yes all usb 3.0 devices will work on the 2.0 usb port. Speed will be slower 2.0 speed. You could buy a 3.0 card for your pc something like this

of course that's if your pc has pci-e slot.
