anyways, i'm still having one small problem - my desktop had been hijacked with an advertisement. while i removed the advertisement and everything causing it, i cannot restore my old desktop. it's that pesky gray/white flashing screen that many others have problems with, but i can't change it by going into the background properties - it just isn't there. i have no idea how to fix it, so some help would be great. thanks!!

Hi shyatt65,
Please go HERE.
Click "File" then "Save Page As" and save it as "smitfraud.reg" , save it as file type "All Files" and save it to your desktop.
Now, close everything and double click on the smitfraud.reg file on your desktop, allow it to merge with the registry. You should be able to change your desktop now.
Next, Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put a check in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Reboot your PC.
If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let me know how your system's working.

Hi shyatt65,
Download & run the "Restore All Display Tabs" .reg file fix. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.
Restore All Display Tabs
Then, reboot your computer and see if you can now change your background.

I successfully merged the RestoreAllTabs.reg to the registry, however the problem remains, ha. it's a pesky one. thank you though
Something i thought was a little weird is that under my desktop properties, no information is given on what the background is, and it lists the address as file://C:\WINDOWS\desktop.html . i don't know if this has any significance, i'm just trying to think of things.
here's another log, if it helps -

Something i thought was a little weird is that under my desktop properties, no information is given on what the background is, and it lists the address as file://C:\WINDOWS\desktop.html . i don't know if this has any significance, i'm just trying to think of things.
here's another log, if it helps -

Hi shyatt65, please try the following.
Go to Control Panel > Display. Click on the "Desktop" tab then click the "Customize Desktop" button. Click on the "Web" tab. Under "Web Pages" you should see an entry checked called something like "Security" or similar. Select that entry and click the "Delete" button. Click OK then Apply and OK. Reboot and see if that gives you control of your desktop back.

Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN
The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
- Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
- AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
- SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
- SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
- IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
- CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
- Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
- Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
- Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
