Laptop (vista) freezes at login/hangs just after startup - Safe mode w

Hi,

My laptop has just started either freezing at login, or hanging (perpetual blue spinning circle) just after startup - the desktop icons never manage to load in properly, it always hangs before then. Safe mode seems to work ok (I'm running in safe mode now) although that froze once as well.

Help!!!

After the latest round of hangs/crashes, my laptop performed scandisk before starting up in safe mode, and I got a 'windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown' message with this info in the window:
