I've built 2 computers a few months ago, and this is my third topic started on this forum regarding problems with them. These are my first computers that I have built, so having nothing but problems with them has been wearing a bit on my psyche since I'm just a TAD neurotic when it comes to "fixing problems." I should be doing it for a living.

So I built 2 identical machines, one for myself and one for my boyfriend, and my boyfriend's machine has been having this recurring issue where his system will crash to BSODs if he ever shuts the machine down and powers it back on. After a few crashes, the system will actually somehow stabilize itself and function perfectly for days. Games will run on it at full strength, videos, internet, everything works fine, but if the computer is shut down and powered back on, the screen gets spammed with blue screens, all of which are completely random and different every time.

What's strange about this is, despite having turned off auto-restart, and turning on writing to event log, nothing comes up in Event Viewer, nothing shows up in BlueScreenView, and the computer just acts as if everything is hunky dory and the BSODs never even happened.

The blue screens will also happen once he has gotten his system to POST and enter Windows just fine, but will wait to crash until he starts browsing Firefox (4.0). SOME BSODs had recorded in his BlueScreenView in the past and all of them are "exceptions" of some kind. SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION he says is the most common, but I've seen others like SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION and KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED.

He had before gotten BSODs while using the computer, not while powering on, but I managed to stop those by updating his drivers and BIOS. That seemed to kill those BSODs, but the ones happening just before Windows opens seem to be getting worse and worse.

My first thought is it could be RAM, since it seems to be happening when browsing the internet just after powering on (and ONLY then). After the machine seems to stop grinding its molars and stop crashing, it works just fine and can handle anything, but appearances can be deceiving, because apparently my computer was working just fine up until my motherboard had a heart attack and died.

Since the computer is for some odd reason not even recording the blue screens, I can't even post them here. I asked him to write down his BSODs Bug Check Codes and Strings as well when it happens again, but the computer has been running for a couple days, and I can't really blame him for not wanting to turn it off, because he and I are both terrified that it'll crash-land straight into a lake covered in crap and never recover again.

Please note: drivers and BIOS are up to date, so it can't be them.

I also remember seeing something about ataport.sys on one of his blue screens, and one of his strings was MEMORY_MANAGEMENT. That's all the information I can give for now, and if his PSU or Mobo is shorting out and I don't know it, I think now is a good time since I have to RMA one or at least three of my freaking components already, and it would be nice to send them all at once while at the post office.

I'm still going to check out his BIOS, possibly tomorrow afternoon, to check his voltages for some people on other forums who are having trouble understanding my problems. I'm learning so much about technology, like how to not freak out when something (AKA everything) goes wrong.

Download Speedfan (The download link is to the right), and install it. Once it's installed, run the program and post here the information it shows.
The information I want you to post is the stuff that is circled in the example picture I have attached.
To make sure we are getting all the correct information it would help us if you were to attach a screenshot like the one below of your Speedfan results.

To do a screenshot please have click on your Print Screen on your keyboard.

• It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
• Now go to Start and then to All Programs
• Scroll to Accessories and then click on Paint
• In the Empty White Area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
• Go to the File option at the top and click on Save as
• Save as file type JPEG and save it to your Desktop
• Attach it to your next reply

Download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

Click Analyze
It will want to download the Debugger and install it Say Yes
WhoCrashed will create report but you have to scroll down to see it

Here's the results of the readings.

I'm going to admit it looks really odd. If the "fans" represent all fans, including case fans, I don't know why it only reads one. There are 3 case fans, all of which are spinning and running just fine. The GPU and PSU fans are spinning, as well as the CPU fan. I don't know if it's strange for it to not be seeing his GPU or cores, either. It looks nothing like the picture shown above as an example.

As for BlueScreenView, this was the only BSOD that got recorded on it, and none of the other tons upon tons of them that happened the same day ever got recorded, probably because Windows couldn't even start.

A system thread generated an exception which the error handler did not catch. There are numerous individual causes for this problem, including hardware incompatibility, a faulty device driver or system service, or some software issues. Check Event Viewer (EventVwr.msc) for additional information.

The Windows kernel detected an illegal or unknown processor instruction. A Stop 0x1E condition can be caused by invalid memory and access violations similar to those that generate Stop 0xA errors. This default Windows error handler typically intercepts these problems if error-handling routines are not present in the code itself.

Dx may just be a faulty driver but lets check the system files to make sure.

Go HERE and read the tutorial that shows how to do SFC or System File Checker and running in a Elevated Command Prompt in Vista and Win7.

The only issue I have with scanning is that the HDDs are set up in RAID0. I've heard that scanning doesn't work properly with RAID arrays and might even make things worse if you try to fix the errors with the command.

I've scanned the drives in the past and I don't think it even came up with anything, but that was a while ago.

If you'd just like me to scan only and see what it finds, I could try that, but I'm afraid of commanding it to fix any errors in fear of causing even more damage to the system.

I actually think it was chkdsk and not sfc that did what I mentioned above, now that I think about it, but just to be on the safe side, I'm going to verify only. I'll post again with the results in a little while.

OK no problem. Follow the instructions and then if you can please post the log and I will go through it to make sure what is needed to be repaired before you do anything.
SFC does not make any changes to the actual disk but only to system files. Any changes to the OS should be updated on the backup raid drive then.

OK that is a good and bad. That means we have to look deeper to find the issue.

Lets start with the DX and see what we can find since that seems to be the root of this.

Go to Start and then to Run and Type in dxdiag and then click Enter
At the bottom of the System page click on Save All Information
Save As a Text file and save to Desktop.Include this file with your next reply.
On the DirectX Files tab, check at the bottom of the window for any problem notes.
On the Display Tab click the
Test DirectDraw button and wait for the results.
Then click the Test Direct3D button and wait for the results.

In your next reply include results of each of the above steps.

ntoskrnl.exe seems to be the most common file in a lot of these. There are still tons of BSODs that aren't even showing up on this machine, which makes this really difficult to troubleshoot. Here are some other BSODs I see often on here.

I feel that even though it says it's likely not hardware related, that seems kind of hard to believe, since these only seem to happen after shutting down and powering on, and the BSODs that happen when doing that don't appear here, or anywhere else.

Apparently he has had a 21a Fatal System Error as well before, as well as have BSODs caused by something called rdyboost.sys (or rdyboot, whichever it is).

My computer also had these identical ntoskrnl related errors, however, I had different BSODs separate from his.
