Welcome to Geeks2Go!

Since Windows 7 has a fairly good firewall built-in, you don't necessarily need a complete internet security package (firewall + antivirus), but you do need at least an antivirus application. Many people seem to quite happy with Microsoft Security Essentials which is a free antivirus & antispyware software from Microsoft and you can get it here: http://www.microsoft...ls/default.aspx

However, if you want a complete internet security package (firewall + antivirus + antispyware) because you may consider the built-in firewall to be inadequate for your needs, I can readily recommend Outpost Internet Security Free from here: http://free.agnitum.com/

Other forum members will no doubt have different recommendations so you will have to choose for yourself, but do remember that you must not have more than one antivirus or firewall running at the same time as that will make your system unstable.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials and Malware Bytes Anti Malware Pro (paid for version). It's worked well for me since September of 09.

If you want to avoid firewall warnings do get an Internet Security package. 9 times out of 10 your modem, gateway, or router already has a good firewall, and if it does not the Windows 7 firewall is adequate.

AVG AntiVirus Free (http://free.avg.com) is a good solution, but as with any antivirus, if you go to the shady sites on the Internet you will get infected. You might want to change your browser to Google Chrome, their sandbox offers an added layer of security.
