On Saturday, I ran AVG Free on my pc and when it finished it told me that I needed to restart for changes to take effect.

When the PC rebooted, I first got the E Machines logo followed by a blank screen with a flashing cursor.

After a few minutes, I get a screen asking if I want to run the pc in safe mode, but I am unable to use the keyboard to change to an alternative option although the num lock light is lit on the keyboard.

After the clock counts down, the PC then runs ScanDisk and either freezes after it has finished or restarts and goes back to the black screen with the flashing cursor and all the lights on the keyboard turn off (around 10 minutes later).

I have tried to press F2, R and F10 to enter these screens, but nothing happens..

I have put in the system restore disk and this also does not seem to load.

Really stuck and have no idea, what else to try.

Help.

No luck, even though the num lock light is on the keyboard it seems not to to be doing anything.

A known good USB keyboard, as PS/2 port does not work.

I want you to try puppy linux...its free small lite and fast...its a live cd and runs totally in ram...
the reason is to make sure the hardware is good...get lupu-525.iso here...
if your system is set to boot from the cd drive first puppy will load all by itself...
if not...do you have a floppy drive connected

have them burn it as a image or it won't work...

if they don't have a burning program that will burn .ISO files go here and get burncdcc ..a small FAST no frills iso burning program...

NOTE...do not put a blank cd in until burncdcc opens the tray for you
1. Start by clicking on BurnCDCC.exe
2. Browse to the ISO file you want to burn on cd/dvd ....in this case its lupu-525.iso
3. Select the ISO file
4. click on Start
