Newbie with display problem

Hope this is in the correct forum. I have a dell inspiron 600m notebook. The screen went black while using it. The computer will boot up and you can see the log in screen if you hold a flashlight to the display but very hard to see through the black display. Video is an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000. LVDS LCD interface, and XGA OR SXGA+ type active-matrix TFT. Could someone please tell me what might be wrong and what might be done to fix it. Any help is appreciated
