Have you tried to personalize the desktop?
I`m not yet familiar with W7 but try this which works in Vista;
Right click on a clear area of your screen and a menu should appear, personalize should be one of the options listed, click on this and you should get another page where you can set the desktop background and screensavers etc, I hope this works for you and keep us posted.
