Just a quick thanks to u guys for last time...

Ok I came to this website a long while back for help because someone decided to use my computer while i was at work and I came out to 'Vista Internet Security' spamming my desktop. First off I couldn't open any .exe program or it would block me and tell me it's malicious. To get around that I opened up pictures, than opened a picture with FireFox and it let me get around that problem to access the internet to get to this site to figure out how to remove it.

Well today I happened to get a virus similar to 'Vista Internet Security' virus called something along the lines of 'Windows Security 2012'. I knew exactly what to do to get rid of it.
>Open task manager
>Click file destination on .exe malicious program
>Now end task on the program
>Rename it
>Delete it

Ok well simple enough. But this time i had a few side effects that are a bit frustrating. When I go to open any .exe program it trys to do 'open with', than i must choose a program to open it with. Here are some examples of what is happening.

>Click open
>Open with appears
>I choose 'firefox' as program to open firefox with
>Firefox.exe which is a program 'would you like to save this file'
>I click cancel or exit out of this dialog box and I can now access the web

>Click open
>Message: This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel.

Attempt 2:
>Put program on my task bar
>Clicked it
>Message: Application not found

The only way i can get any program to open is right clicking the icon and choosing 'start'. Unfortunately not many of the programs are having this option.

EDIT: Also my antivirus program is no longer running and i have an icon on my taskbar that says 'Windows Security Alerts'. But i can't open it.
EDIT:I tried to fix registry errors and after I did that I got this message 'Cannot import C:\Users\Christian 2\Desktop\exefix_vista.reg: Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes.

Now .exe programs work but does that mean I still have errors on my computer that I need to fix?

EDIT: Now my firewall is saying it is off. When i go to turn it on it says "This program will not run" "The system cannot find the file specified."

Hi Necient,

Welcome to Geekstogo. My name is Salagubang and I'll be helping you with this problem.

  • Please read all of my response through at least once before attempting to follow the procedures described. I would recommend printing them out, if you can, as you can check off each step as you complete it. If there's anything you don't understand or isn't totally clear, please come back to me for clarification.
  • Please do not attach any log files to your replies unless I specifically ask you. Instead please copy and paste so as to include the log in your reply. You can do this in separate posts if it's easier for you
  • English is not my first language, so please do not use slang or idioms, as this makes it difficult to understand for me.

Download OTL to your Desktop
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\Results\Install|LastSuccessTime /rs

  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them in your next reply
