My son picked up XP Antispyware 2012 today. Nothing on the computer worked, though I did get a MS Security Essentials scan started, but it found nothing.
I followed the procedure on bleeping computer, but the first step failed; I couldn't get IE to run.
In desperation I simply removed everything from the start up menu and rebooted. Incredibly enough, everything worked fine!
I downloaded MBAM and it found 25 infections.
I rebooted and everything works normally EXCEPT I can't update MSSE; it says it can't get an internet connection, though it will do a scan. IE can get an internet connection, and I can update MSSE on this computer; so I think maybe part of the problem is still there.

I then downloaded SAS and it found TrojanAgent/gull.nullo(short) or something like that.
I ran 4 on-line scanners and they removed 5 more infections. Still I can't update MSSE.

I deleted MSSE and reinstalled it. Still can't update it. I also don't seem to be able to update XP.

I just got off from and hour with MS Support. They found that the trojan had disabled all MS updates. Everything seems to work okay now.

I appreciate your help.
