Did you install the drive for the wireless device?

Is the wireless switch on?

Look at Device Manage, under Network Adapters, what is shown there? Any yellow marks anywhere?

Press Winkey+r, type devmgmt.msc and press Enter.

Are you running Vista? If so, 32 or 64 bit?

The drivers for you laptop are here: Software & Driver Downloads - Compaq Presario C700 CTO Notebook PC

What is the complete model number of your laptop?

Presario C700xxxxxx????

The Compaq (HP actually) web site lists dozens of models. For instance:

» Compaq Presario C700 CTO Notebook PC
» Compaq Presario C700LA Notebook PC
» Compaq Presario C700T CTO Notebook PC
» Compaq Presario C700XX Notebook PC
» Compaq Presario C701LA Notebook PC
» Compaq Presario C701XX Notebook PC
» Compaq Presario C702LA Notebook PC
» Compaq Presario C702XX Notebook PC
» Compaq Presario C703LA Notebook PC
» Compaq Presario C705LA Notebook PC
» Compaq Presario C706NR Notebook PC
» Compaq Presario C707LA Notebook PC

All of them list a Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver for Microsoft Windows Vista and not an Atheros WLAN.
