WHat is the recommended free software for optimizing my hard drive? Windows XP

I am guessing by optimizing you mean speeding up? here are some basic stuff that you can do and I shall take you through them. First one is to clear all the temporary internet files and so on to do this read below

  • Click Start and goto Run
  • Type in cleanmgr hit enter and Disk Cleanup will appear
  • Tick the boxes and click ok

That should clear a little bit of space. You can also defragment your hard drive.

Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Defragmenter

Now this isn't to do with optimizing as such but you could also get a quick check for malware over at our malware removal forum. I reccomend that you read the following topic here and then post your problem here.

Other than that, thats about it and I would advise to stay clear of registry cleaners.
