Hi, I am new here.

I have this problem: A virus alert keeps popping out.
<<Norton AntiVirus has detected a virus on your computer.
Object Name: C:\\WINDOWS\system32\rdriv.sys
Virus Name: Trojan Horse
Action Taken: Unable to repair this file.>>

Besides, Windows Explorer keeps shutting down and a message keeps popping out /something about Generic Host for Win32, I did not remember it/.

SE Personal can't find any critical objects.

I downloaded and ran the Hijack This Software.

Here is a copy of the log file:

Hello, Michelle, thank you for your post :tazz:
I don't have the trojan notification popping out anymore but I still have than message "Generic host for Sys32... needs to close..." or something like that.
Plus, very often after this message appears, my computer refuses to play audio files.

Here is the Hijack this log:

This is a really nasty infection, so please follow all instructions exactly as specified.

Copy the below instructions (until you get to the purple text). Paste them into notepad and save it for use while in Safe Mode.

I need you to reboot into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

After getting into Safe Mode, Go to Start > Run type in:

cmd

Click OK.

A black window will open up, copy and paste this line exactly:

attrib -h -r -s C:\WINDOWS\system32\rdriv.sys

Hit Enter.

When it goes to the 2nd line copy and paste this line exactly:

del C:\WINDOWS\system32\rdriv.sys

Hit Enter.

Then type exit

[END OF INSTRUCTIONS TO COPY FOR SAFE MODE]

Reboot into normal mode.

Open Notepad, and copy everything inside the code box (Starting with REGEDIT4) below and paste it into a new notepad file. Go up to "File" > "Save As...". A box will open up. Change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as rdriv.reg on your Desktop. Make sure there is NO blank line above REGEDIT4

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Reboot into Safe Mode, you can do this by restarting your computer, then contiunally tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter. Then, run Ewido.
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder

    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop

Actually, when I ran the Command Prompt, it couldn't find a file named rdriv.sys.

I still get the message about Generic Host for Win32 Services.

Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the below service:

Workstation Service Library

*make sure it has this exact name because there may be a legitimate service by similar name.

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok.

Run HiJackThis. Click on "None of the above, just start the program". Now, click on the "Config" button (bottom right), then click on "Misc Tools", then click on "Delete an NT Service" a window will pop up. Enter the below item into that field (copy and paste):

Microsoft Locator Service

Click ok.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES.

After reboot, do this:
I need you to copy all of the Killbox instructions below and paste them into Notepad and save it.

* Run Killbox.exe.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Open the Notepad file where you saved these instructions earlier, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them then press CTRL + C

After your computer reboots, Run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

Hi, thanks for the quick response!

I will do what you request. However, when I choose "Paste from clipboard" on the KillBox, nothing happens, I mean the place of the file name and path stays blank.

Should I paste the files one by one?

Thanks :tazz:

Now I feel like I'm really doubting the ice here but the log I just posted was not the last one.

Here is the last one /if you are still not convinced you are dealing with a total idiot, now is the right moment :tazz: /

None right now really. Just sitting here, waiting for the nasty messages to appear :tazz:

Thank you, Michelle, for the thorough instructions.

There is another thing I would like you to do. Your system was pretty nasty and there may be other items hiding out :tazz:

So, I need you to run a scan for me. It takes a while to do, but it needs to be done! ;)

*Please dowload: RegSeeker.
*Click on "Clean The Registry" in the left panel.
*Check all boxes (make sure the backup box in the lower left corner is selected!).
*After it runs, click "Select All" on the bottom, then right-click on any selected item in the window and select "Delete Selected Items".
*Click "Quit RegSeeker".

Now, open any of your installed programs, and make sure that everything opens ok. If so, reboot, then go back and run the RegSeeker again, do the same thing again if anything is found. You need to run RegSeeker until there are very few to no items found. If there are a couple of items that won't go way it's fine! You may have to run RegSeeker 5+ times to get everything just remember to reboot before running RegSeeker again. After running RegSeeker, here is the big scan I would like you to do:

I need you to download MWav

This scan might take around 3+ hours to finish when set to scan everything. I need you to run MWav, put a check next to below items before scanning:

*Memory
*Startup Folders
*Drive - All Local Drives
*Folder - then click "browse" to change the directory to C: (default is C:\Windows)
*Registry
*System Folders
*Services
*Include Sub-Directory
*Scan All Files

Please make sure ALL of these are checked, then press the scan button. This will take hours to complete.

**NOTE*** Sometimes MWav will pause and it appears to be finished, but it isn't done. Just let it run until it says it's complete.

When the scan is running, you will see a bottom window that is listing infected items. When the scan is complete, highlight the items in that window and hold CTRL + C to Copy then paste it here. The whole log will be extremely big so there is no way to copy the whole thing. I just need the infected items list that's in the window.

Hi!

<<You need to run RegSeeker until there are very few to no items found.>>

Are 586 a few? :tazz:

I will run RegSeeker again of course but I thought I should let you know that I have again the "Generic Host for Win32 Services" message, and after it appears, here is what happens: Windows seems to change its theme to an older Windows version (e.g. 98) for a while and then goes back to normal appearance.
It is usually then that it refuses to play audio files.

This used to happen before as well but I forgot to mention it.

Still running RegSeeker and rebooting every once in a while,

Kalina ;)

586 is too many. Just run RegSeeker, reboot, run RegSeeker again until it gets to just a few items.

hmm, it's strange that your desktop changes to classic then back to XP...never heard of that happening before!

Definitely need to run MWav after getting done with RegSeeker :tazz:

I thought it might be a good idea to finally copy and paste the message that kept appearing:

<<Generic Host Process for Win32 Services

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.

For more information about this error, click here.>>

And then:

<<Error signature
szAppName : szAppVer : 0.0.0.0 szModName : unknown
szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00000000

To view technical information about the error report, click here.>>

<<Error Report Contents
The following files will be included in this error report:
C:\DOCUME~1\user\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERC.tmp.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\user\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERC.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt>>

This time the theme did not change back to XP. Actually it is only the Start Button and the Task Bar that change to Classic. All open windows /browsers & programs/ keep the XP theme.
