Essentially my computer is just running very slowly and I've been led to believe it may be caused by malware. I currently use AVG free to scan for viruses and I'm not particularly computer savvy but its never found any viruses. I think it may possibly simply be the fact that I am running windows 7 with only 1 gig of RAM but that is only from what some have told me. I download torrents from time to time so that also makes me think something might have infected it. A lot of times I will open the task manager and it shows the CPU usage at 100% which seems odd to me. I'm trying to be as descriptive as possible but essentially my laptop is just running slowly and I'm hoping (somewhat, I guess) malware might be to blame. Whether its opening Chrome, new tabs in Chrome, or the majority of programs on my computer, its been creeping very slowly lately. Any and all help is greatly appreciated, especially by someone like me who doesn't even understand the concept of computer code. Thanks again.

Hello deke120 and welcome to G2G! :)

My nick is maliprog and I'll will be your technical support on this issue. Before we start please read my notes carefully:

NOTE:
  • Malware removal is NOT instantaneous, most infections require several courses of action to completely eradicate.
  • Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean
  • Kindly follow my instructions in the order posted. Order is crucial in cleaning process.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans or fix on your own without my direction.
  • Please read all of my response through at least once before attempting to follow the procedures described.
  • If there's anything you don't understand or isn't totally clear, please come back to me for clarification.
  • Please do not attach any log files to your replies unless I specifically ask you. Instead please copy and paste so as to include the log in your reply.
  • You must reply within 3 days or your topic will be closed

Let's do some scanning first.

Step 1

Please close all running programs and Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :OTL
IE - HKCU\..\URLSearchHook: {bf7380fa-e3b4-4db2-af3e-9d8783a45bfc} - Reg Error: Key error. File not found
    O33 - MountPoints2\{9de30051-fbdd-11df-bd80-c80aa9aadd7e}\Shell - "" = AutoRun
    O33 - MountPoints2\{9de30051-fbdd-11df-bd80-c80aa9aadd7e}\Shell\AutoRun\command - "" = G:\SETUP.EXE

    :Files
    ipconfig /flushdns /c

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [emptyflash]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Post the fix log it produces in your next reply or you can find it in C:\_OTL\MovedFiles

Step 2

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Step 3

Please don't forget to include these items in your reply:

  • OTL fix log
  • Malwarebytes log
It would be helpful if you could post each log in separate post

I followed these steps, the automatically manage paging file size for all drives was already checked so I left it as such, ran the scan and then downloaded and ran the puran disc defragmenter. This is where it got a bit interesting, upon restarting after running the defrag, the computer froze up as it was "Starting Windows" it stayed on the start up screen and then shut down from an excessive temperature (something that has happened in the past, this thing sounds like a vacuum cleaner from time to time and the vents are not blocked) at which point I restarted and windows prompted me with a warning that said windows could not start up and it ran a self diagnostic process, which took a long time and ultimately said that windows could not fix the problem. So the screen froze up and I had to hold down the power button to force the computer to power off. It took a few tries and I went into the startup menu and ran a HP diagnostics, which said there was nothing wrong but I still had to restart the computer about four times before it actually started up. Now it seems to be working fine, as far as the performance issues go I haven't noticed a big difference since having gone through the steps above, but I should probably push it and try running a few programs at the same time as that is when it tends to act up. Thanks much for all the help, and let me know if/what I should try next. Thanks.

Hi deke120,

This is probably system problem because there is nothing to remove. If you still have problems maybe you should open new topic in Windows Vista™ and Windows 7™.

Your logs and system are clean now. I'm glad we fix up your computer. We need to clean up your PC from programs we used.

Step 1

Please start OTL one more time and click CleanUp button. OTL will restart your system at the end. Remove all other application we used to clean your PC.

General recommendations

Here are some recommendations you should follow to minimize infection risk in the future:

1. Enable Windows Update
  • Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then press ENTER.
  • Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select one of the following options. We recommend that you select the Automatic (recommended) Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them option.
  • Click OK button

2. Delete Temp files

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Open the file and close any other windows.
  • It will close all programs itself when run, make sure to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. The program should not take long to finish its job
  • Once its finished it should reboot your machine, if not, do this yourself to ensure a complete clean

3. Make Backups of Important Files

Please read this article Home Computer Data Backup.

4. Regularly update your software

To eliminate design flaws and security vulnerabilities, all software needs to be updated to the latest version or the vendor’s patch installed.

You should download Update Checker from here. The program will automaticly check for newer version of software installed on your system.
