I have a HP desktop and am running windows 7. When doing the hardware diagnostic test, it says that the smart short self test and the surface scan test both fail. My computer seems to be running fine though. How can I fix these problems on my own?

You don't. It involves replacing the hard drive.
These are signs that a problem will be developing in the near future. Therefore make your back-ups now and keep them up to date before the inevitable happens. Therefore when the drive does fail, you have all the important stuff safe.
