If I'm logging into a website they can obviously see my IP address. However are they also able to see details about my machine I'm using such as the netbios info?

Potentially but providing the machine is on the latest service pack for your Windows (SP3 for XP, SP2 for Vista or SP1 for Windows 7) and has all the other updates you should be fine.
Some third party firewall software wouldn't be a bad idea either.
