On Tuesday I got a notification that I had the Win.32.winad.ab virus, but when I ran a full system scan Symantec said I was clean. I found your homepage and followed the instructions on the malware/spyware page and have also updated and run About:Buster, Spyware Blaster, and WinPatrol. Any problems that came up I fixed and rebooted but my computer is still running really slow as is the internet and I keep getting kicked off. Also, I will get the error message that "Win 32 Has Encountered and Error" and it has to close. The details in the error message usually say something about explorer.exe and ntdll.dll or say to look at: C:\Docume~1\Admini~1\Locals~1\Temp\WER9.tmp.dir001\svchost.exe.mdmp and C:\Docume~1\Admini~1\Locals~1\Temp\WER9.tmp.dir001\appcompat.txt. Also, Google was reset as my homepage and every Web page I go to has little Goooooogle ads all over it. I hope all that wasn't too confusing! I don't know what else I can do. Here is my Hijackthis log. Hopefully that will make sense!

Welcome to Geeks to Go!

First, I need you to disable WinPatrol as it can and will interfere with cleaning your system.

Then, download, install, and run CleanUp! (so the scan won't take as long because cleanup will clear temporary files) *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, backup it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running Cleanup!

Download Ewido Security Suite
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Reboot into Safe Mode, you can do this by restarting your computer, then contiunally tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter. Then, run Ewido.
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
Reboot into normal mode.

Run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com

Close HiJackThis.

Then, please run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Save the results from ActiveScan.

I need you to post the log from Ewido, the log from ActiveScan, and a new HiJackThis log.

Thanks for your help Bananafanafo!

I followed your instructions but I heard that you aren't supposed to have two anti-virus programs running at the same time on your computer? I already have Symantec Anti-Virus, but I went ahead and downloaded Ewido like you said. Please tell me if I should uninstall one later.

Here is my Ewido Log:

I hope this helps some! Thanks again for your patience!

Yes, you are correct that you are not supposed to run more than one Anti-Virus program. However, Ewido is an Anti-Spyware program so it will be fine :tazz:

Does it list the exact location for NTDLL.exe? If yes, please let me know what it is.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following:

Viewpoint
MyWay (or MySearch) (if there)

Exit Add Remove Programs.

Then, please delete the following folders, in bold, if found:

C:\Program Files\MySearch
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint (this one may not be there)
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Viewpoint (this one will most likely be there!)

Then, please do me a favor and locate this file (using windows explorer, please don't try to find it by "search"):
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntmssvc.exe

*NOTE* there will be a ntmssvc.dll which is a Microsoft file and fine, I'm just looking for info on the ntmssvc.exe

Right-click on it and go to properties and tell me if it has a version tab and anything in it.

While still in the Sytem32 folder, tell me if this file is present:
C:\Windows\System32\ntdll.exe (there will be a ntdll.dll which, again, is a MS file but just need to know if the exe is there)

Post a new HiJackThis log.

Thanks again for your patience!

I went to Add/Remove programs and it said that Viewpoint Manager had already been uninstalled, but I went ahead and removed it from the Add Hardware list. There was no entry for MySearch. I also found and deleted the files/folders you told me too. Unfortunately the error message doesn't tell me where to find ntdll.exe and when I went under Windows Explorer and System 32 and all that but I couldn't find ntmssvc.exe. I've had other people look too (Just to make sure I wasn't completely blind) and they can't find it either. We also couldn't find ntdll.exe :tazz: Sorry! Here is my current Hijack This Log:

It's possible that both are hidden files, please Set your system to SHOW HIDDEN FILES - Click this link to learn how

After your hidden files are showing, use windows explorer again to see if you can locate these 2, if either are there:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntmssvc.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ntdll.exe

Right-click on ntmssvc.exe and go to properties and tell me if it has a version tab and anything in it.

I've unhidden all my files and still no ntdll.exe or ntmssvc.exe. My computer did freeze again however and I got more of the same message. I copied down what it said about the ntdll.dll file if that would be of any use to you? Probably not but I thought it might be worth a try anyway! And my computer is still running google ads on everypage and underlining words with links to ads. I'm not sure what else to do? Thanks for everything you've done for me so far!

So, the error message was for ntdll.dll and not ntdll.exe?

Yes, please tell me the exact error message that your getting.

Then please run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ntmssvc] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntmssvc.exe

Close HijackThis.

Sorry for all the questions, but your log is not indicating anything other than the ntmssvc.exe file on startup.

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the exact error message you are receiving.

I usually recieve the error message when I try to right click on something. The last error message I recieved while I was on AIM and it said "AIM has encountered an error and needs to close" The first module under the technical aspects of the report was aim.exe and the second module was NTDLL.DLL which also said:

Signature: feef04bd
StrucVer: 00010000
File Ver: 5.1:2600.1217
Prod Ver: 5.1:2600.1217
Flagmask: 0000003f
Flags: 00000000
OS: 00040004
SubType: 00000000
File Date: 00000000.00000000

It also says at the bottom of the report that C:\Docume~1\Admini~1\Locals~1\Temp\WER4.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt will be included in the report that's sent to Microsoft.

I fixed what you said and here is my new Hijack this Log:

Ok, thank you. I need you to do this for (it will take a while to do!) because your log is not showing anything and Ewido and ActiveScan showed very little. It could just be due to your AIM - do you have the most recent version? If MWav finds any spyware we will delete it, then we will clean out your registry and see if that helps the problem.

I need you to download MWav

This scan might take around 3+ hours to finish when set to scan everything. I need you to run MWav, put a check next to below items before scanning:

*Memory
*Startup Folders
*Drive - All Local Drives
*Folder - then click "browse" to change the directory to C: (default is C:\Windows)
*Registry
*System Folders
*Services
*Include Sub-Directory
*Scan All Files

Please make sure ALL of these are checked, then press the scan button. This will take hours to complete.

**NOTE*** Sometimes MWav will pause and it appears to be finished, but it isn't done. Just let it run until it says it's complete.

When the scan is running, you will see a bottom window that is listing infected items. When the scan is complete, highlight the items in that window and hold CTRL + C to Copy then paste them here. The whole log will be extremely big so there is no way to copy the whole thing. I just need the infected items list that's in the window.

Well, MWav didn't find anywhere current spyware, just a little mess in the registry which we'll take care of right now :tazz:

*Please dowload: RegSeeker.
*Click on "Clean The Registry" in the left panel.
*Check all boxes (make sure the backup box in the lower left corner is selected!).
*After it runs, click "Select All" on the bottom, then right-click on any selected item in the window and select "Delete Selected Items".
*Click "Quit RegSeeker".

Now, open any of your installed programs, and make sure that everything opens ok. If so, reboot, then go back and run the RegSeeker again, do the same thing again if anything is found. When RegSeeker finds nothing else, let me know if you're still having problems.

You do have the latest version of AIM?

Thanks for your patience! I do have the latest version of AIM. It usually kicked me off when I'd click on the profile's of anyone with a Mac. I'm sure that sounds really strange but it hasn't happened yet today!! :tazz: I ran RegSeeker seven times now and the following two things just won't seem to go away.

HKey_Classes_Root
Applications\Explorer.exe
"Open With" entry unused

HKey_Current_User
Software\Local AppWizard-Generated Applications
Obsolete Entry

I wasn't sure if I should keep running RegSeeker and see if they finally delete, or if they were okay? Other than that everything seems to be working fine and Google is finally back to normal! Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you!
