Im new here and I'm having troubles with my iTunes

I just recently bought and ipod and found out I needed itunes to start it up.
So I downloaded iTunes, and it gets my iPod but it just says:

"iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. The network connection timed out.

Mak sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, then trying again."

and I've been searching topics under the same category but all the information just keeps repeating and
I've already tried all of those things, but nothing helps. I tried the "firewall", I turned it off, and
nothing. I tried the "Internet option" And it didn't help either, I tried restarting my computer and iTunes,
nothing. And I also did a diagnostic test, but I have no idea how to pull out any information from it..

So I was hoping someone in here knows how to help me. Please? Because Im becoming really frustrated,
I've been working on this thing for more than 5 hours now and I cant find whats wrong with it.
