I am trying to follow your steps to remove spyware from my computer. I've tried several times to download misc. versions from download.com and it gets to a certain place and then won't complete the download. It stays at about 84% complete and won't go any further. I started with your step one and tried to down load the "clean up" and it won't even do that. What do I need to do? thank you for your help!

hi Kathy, and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Kat, and I'll be helping you clean your pc back up!

Have you been able to get HijackThis saved to your computer? If you have, please post me a copy of the HijackThis log here in a reply, and I'll take a look. If you haven't tried...please do so now, and let me know if you can.

Be sure to save it to a PERMANENT folder. You can make one yourself in your "C" drive, or even in your "My Documents" folder. Just don't save it to a temp location, or the desktop!

Thanks so much for your reply. I wasn't sure what the "Hijack This" is, so I went to the link at the top of the home page that said "Hijack Spyware" which took me to a page for SpyDoctor. It started to download, said it was going to take an hour and 15 minutes, and after 20 minutes had not moved off of 1% done. So I cancelled out of it. I had Spysweeper which I loved, but it expired. I was then trying to download something again to get rid of this junk and that's when I discovered that it was not letting me download spyware removers. Perhaps it wouldn't let me download anything else either, I don't know, I haven't tried. But I have four sons, and I've got [bleep] popping up everywhere. So they can't use the computer and it's killing them...you know kids. Thank you for your help! I'd appreciate any advice you can give. I've dealth with spyware before, but none that's not let me try to get rid of it.

Should I have not used my name? I noticed that everyone else has used a fake name....oops...

Hi Kathy!! First of all, if you are uncomfortable using your real name, please let me know what you'd like to change it to, and I will do that right away. I won't even have to ask someone to do it for me, as I am an Admin. here and can just log in and change it for you! :tazz:

Now, to get HJT for us!

Posting a Hijack This Log
Posted Image Hijack This - Download - Homepage

Save HijackThis in its own folder (i.e. C:\HJT). DO NOT run it from within a zip manager (Winzip), as no backups will be saved.

This is how HijackThis looks when it first opened.

You do not have to change any settings at this point.
Notice the empty section in the middle. This is where the scan results will be listed later.
Examine the two sets of buttons. To start the scan, Click the Scan button on the left.

Posted Image
HijackThis after the scan.

The Scan Button has a new Caption. Save Log. Click the Save Log button to create a file named Hijackthis.log. A dialog box will pop up. Use it to select the location where you will save the log. Close the program.

Return to the Forum and reply to your original post. Open the Log in Notepad. Highlight the entire contents. Copy and paste the contents of the HijackThis log into your post. Wait for help.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):
C:\WINDOWS\system32\siq.dll

After that, Reboot.

Post a fresh HJT log here in a reply after you have done the above, and let me know if the system is running better!

Kat,

Thank you so much!!!!! We are back in business! I wish I could convey my gratitude! It is such a hopeless feeling not knowing how to fix it. And you helped put me back in charge...where I can continue to protect my sons from what this world tries to offer them! Blessings to you and your loved ones!

That's great to hear!! YOu're welcome, Kathy. It's what I"m here for!

Congratulations! Your log is now clean! :tazz:
Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.
