Hi, I'm new here.

A week ago i started getting this popup with ads called "Aurora." I thought it was just another spyware so i scanned with a-squared, Webroot Spysweeper, and Spybot. Surprisingly, it was still there. So i used Ad-Aware SE, CWShredder, and McAfee Scan. It remains. So i googled and here i am. I read other Aurora problems but i don't know if the exact same instructions apply to me. Here is my hijackthis log:

Any help would be much much appreciated. Thanks :tazz:

BTW if internet explorer shows anywhere in the log saying my embarrasing homepage and favorites and stuff, its because i stopped using IE a year ago and i never bothered with it again. Firefox Owns.

Welcome to Geeks to Go!

lol No worries, we don't care what your homepage or favorites are (unless they were put there by malware!) :tazz:

First, download, install, and run CleanUp! (so the scan won't take as long because cleanup will clear temporary files) *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, backup it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running Cleanup!

Please download Ewido Security Suite
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Reboot into Safe Mode, you can do this by restarting your computer, then contiunally tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter. Then, run Ewido.
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
Reboot into normal mode.

Then, please run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Save the results from ActiveScan.

I need you to post the log from Ewido, the log from ActiveScan and a new HiJackThis log.

Ok i did the ewido scan. Later i found the Virus Scan to be not working. I used Mozilla, and said it wasn't supported. I switched over and used Internet Explorer, but after I clicked on "All My Computer" nothing happened. I don't see a progress bar or anything popping up. I was unable to start the Virus scan. Is there a substitute I could use that works just as well/better?

Here is my Ewido Log:

Ok, that's fine, please run this one and see if you can get it to work (with IE):

TrendMicro's HouseCall - check "Auto Clean"

If it doesn't work, that's fine, just post another HiJackThis log for me please.

thanks very much for your help. I'd donate, but I'm only a student who is flat broke.

BTW, restoring my computer and losing all my files is most unwanted. I can't imagine myself doing that so thanks again, for your help :tazz:

Please read through and follow all instructions!

No worries, there will be no re-format or loss of anything but malware if I have anything to say about it :tazz:

First, I need you to right click on the desktop and go to New > Folder - click on it and name it whatever you want. Locate HiJackThis.exe on the desktop right click on it and go to "cut", then go into the folder you just made and click "paste". This is to ensure backups are saved and accessible.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following:

SpySpotter.exe
(It is a rogue Anti-Spyware program, there are much better alternatives)
SpywareNuker (if found)

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

I need you to copy all of the Killbox instructions below and paste them into Notepad and save it.

* Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

* Save it to your desktop.

* Run Killbox.exe.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Open the Notepad file where you saved these instructions earlier, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them then press CTRL + C

C:\WINDOWS\systb.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\llarifmb.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qtq.dll
C:\windows\temp\g6.exe
C:\documents and settings\eric xu\local settings\temp\s16.exe
C:\WINDOWS\satmat.exe
C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\SpywareNukerInstaller.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Eric Xu\Application Data\eetu.exe
C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe
C:\windows\system32\JIO.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\BDPlugin.dll

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt. If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to high-light Safe Mode, then hit enter.

While in Safe Mode, Run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following items, if found, and click FIX CHECKED:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com

Close HijackThis. Reboot into normal mode.

Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the below service:

System Startup Service (or SvcProc)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok.

Run HiJackThis. Click on "None of the above, just start the program". Now, click on the "Config" button (bottom right), then click on "Misc Tools", then click on "Delete an NT Service" a window will pop up. Enter the below item into that field (copy and paste):

SvcProc

Click ok.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES.

After reboot, post a new HiJackThis log.

Nope, I didn't misread anything. You do (or did at one point) have SpySpotter on your system. Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove:

SpySpotter

Here is the entry in your HiJackThis log if you don't believe me:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpySpotter] C:\PROGRA~1\SPYSPO~1\SpySpotter.exe

Run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [s16] C:\documents and settings\eric xu\local settings\temp\s16.exe

O16 - DPF: {1D6711C8-7154-40BB-8380-3DEA45B69CBF} (Web P2P Installer) -

Close HiJackThis.

Make sure this file is gone, if present, please delete it:

C:\documents and settings\eric xu\local settings\temp\s16.exe (it should be gone)

Reboot and post another HiJackThis log and let me know how it's running.

Yay no more aurora! :tazz:

Since you obviously know your anti-malware um... "stuff", what program do you recommend to get rid of those programs best? (If they were to ever appear again)

Looks good!

Here is what I recommend to keep your system clean:

Congratulations your log is clean! Great job on the clean up :tazz:

I recommend checking the http://www.microsoft.com website periodically for critical updates to install.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Ewido Security Suite <= Protection against Trojans, Worms, Dialers, Hijackers, Spyware, and Keyloggers.

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

awesome! thanks again. helpful place, this forum is :tazz:

but about MVPS, does it prevent direct connections from another internet user to my computer? in a non-hijack situation, that is.
