Hello.
For the past year or so, my computer has been getting slower and slower. I have always assumed that it is because it is an old computer (more than 5 years). However, my kids inform me that since I never installed an anti-spyware program, it's possible there are other factors contributing to my beloved computer's slowness. I have now installed McAfee and Spyware Doctor, but decided to come here to get my computer cleaned as well.

Furthermore, if my computer is left on too long, it will reach a strange stage of not being on and not being off? I don't know if that makes sense; the monitor will turn black, but my computer shows that it is still on...except I cannot run any programs or see anything. I have to restart the computer by unplugging it because the button seems to have no effect on its on/off stage if it is in this state.

I am using Internet Explorer and I find that if I open more than 1 tab, IE will crash. This does not happen on my laptop, so I feel this is not simply an IE problem. Also, when there are 2 tabs running on IE, my connection speed will become excrutiatingly slow.


I have read the cleaning guide post and have since run an OTL scan.

Could you copy and paste the OTL log? (You posted the Extras log.)

Did you buy McAfee? You already had MSSE (Microsoft Security Essentials - free anti-virus from Microsoft) and your event log says that McAfee is already having problems. You should only run one anti-virus at a time. Two will fight each other and make the PC even slower. Please uninstall one or the other.

Get the free version of Speccy:

http://www.filehippo...download_speccy (Look in the upper right for the Download
Latest Version button) Download, Save and Install it. Run Speccy. When it finishes (the little icon in the bottom left will stop moving), File, Save as Text File, (to your desktop) note the name it gives. OK. Attach the file to your next post.

Curses. Your PC doesn't have the temperature sensors or Speccy doesn't know how to read them. It sounds to me like you PC is getting hot. I would turn it off but leave it plugged up. Open it up and vacuum out the dust. Pay special attention to the CPU's heatsink (there should be a fan sitting on top of it or at least one being ducted to it. Turn it on and verify that that fan runs strongly and does not make a lot of noise.

Hello.

I don't know if it is worth mentioning or not, but when I ran Combofix, my computer kind of blanked out. My desktop and taskbar disappeared entirely. The only thing I could see on the monitor was the Combofix window. And then it seemed like Combofix was frozen so I restarted it. It seems as though it made the log okay, but I just though I should tell you this.

I have deleted Spyware Doctor.

Combofix can take a while especially if something is fighting it. The log is nowhere near complete so let's try it again. This time from Safe Mode. Reboot and when you hear the beep, see the maker's logo or it mentions F8 start tapping the F8 key slowly. Keep tapping until you see the Safe Mode menu. Choose Safe Mode with Networking. Login with your usual login or you won't see Combofix on your desktop. Then make sure your antivirus is off and run Combofix. Go watch a TV show or something once it starts the Dos window. It's normal for it to kill the desktop so be patient.

Sorry I missed your reply somehow. (If I don't reply in 24 hours PM me and wake me up).

I see some junk in your Combofix but nothing that should make it run super slow. It appears that your Microsoft Security Essentials is not happy. I think we need to replace it with the free Avast.

Download and Save the free Avast installer.

Uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials

Reboot

Install the free Avast. (Register when it asks you - they will try to talk you in to buying the full product but the free version is what we want.)

Once you have it installed and it has updated:

Click on the Avast ball. Then click on Scan Computer, then on
Boot-Time Scan then on Settings. Change the Ask at the bottom to Move to Chest. OK then Schedule Now. Reboot and let it run a scan. It may take hours.
Once it finishes it should load windows. Click on the Avast ball and then on Scan Logs, select the Boot-time scan report then View Results. Did it find anything?



Click on the Avast ball. Then click on Additional Protections then on AutoSandbox then on Settings then uncheck Enable AutoSandbox. OK
Right click on the Avast Ball and select Avast! Shields Control and Disable Until Computer is Restarted, Yes

Run Combofix again and post the log.

Now open notepad (Start, Run, notepad, OK) and Ctrl + V to paste the text into Notepad. Make sure you got it all then File, SAVE AS, (to your Desktop), CFScript , OK. Close notepad. (Overwrite the old one if it's still there.) You should see a file CFScript.txt on your desktop.

Pause your anti-virus.

Drag CFScript.txt over to Combofix and let go Combofix should start on its own.

Post the new log.

hi! i hadn't realized i installed softonic. i have deleted it.

i also believe i deleted spyware doctor. it's possible i'm removing these programs incorrectly. but i no longer see it listed in the add/remove programs window...can you tell if it is still on my computer?

I can't really tell if you are doing it right or not. I had Combofix remove them anyway and your log looks a lot cleaner. Is the still slow?
