Sorry if this is in the wrong forum or ???

I was going to try and increase my ram...

lifted the lid on desktop...

found a metal cover where it looks like the ram chips reside under...

there is a latch, but when i try to unlatch it and lift the cover, nothing.

afraid i will damage the board....

is there a trick...

anybody even remember working on one of these?

thanks....

The Removing and Replacing Parts manual for the Dell OptiPlex GX1 system can be found here. There is a DIMM Removal and Installation section for four different chassis. But none of them show a metal cover, just the socket ejectors that you push outward.
Hope this helps.

godawgs, thank you for link to manual.....

now i am confused...but that is normal :) . ..i need to get back inside the machine and identify what i was looking at....the manual says to :

#1 Remove the system power supply.
#2 Locate the DIMM that you wish to remove...etc..

probably was a screw that i didn't see...

thanks a lot!!!

Hi barncat,

Those are the instructions for the Midsize chassis. An internal view of the Midsize chassis can be found here. The directions for removing the power supply are here. You can find the DIMM capacities and the Maximum amount of Ram under the Memory section here. Hope that helps clear it up.

got it!...the problem was my eyes...put on strong glasses and used a bright light and saw how the catch operated...the metal shield was the power supply, which flips over to expose the ram strips....your links helped me to see what i needed to do for sure...

thanks
