I fear I've deleted something important --
my computer (VISTA 32 bits, HP G7070EJ),
has NO restore points.

When I try to create one, I receive this error: cannot create shadow copy

When I try to back up to MyBook Essential,
I essentially receive the same message.

Frightening.

Make sure Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider and Volume Shadow Copy are started in Services. If not set them to Manual and start them.

To get to the Services window, click Start, type services.msc and press Enter.

Were they both started?

Run System File Checker.

Click Start, type cmd and press Enter.
Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.

Let it run to completion, see if it finds and corrects any problems.

Don't know if it matters or not. Worth trying in any case I would think.

You never did say if the two services were running or not, only that they were set to Manual. From some threads I've read on this problem, setting them to Automatic instead of Manual fixed the problem.

Other threads say setting DEP to Turn on DEP for essential windows programs and services only has helped.

This thread had several things that worked for different people: Vista Application Error 4100 (0x8004230F)

I switched both to automatic. No difference.

I changed the DEP setting. No difference. Change back?

I begna this, as you recommended: Cannot Create Restore Point 0x80042318 error

These directions are difficult for someone like me who is not veryt computer-registry savvy. I got as far as stopping the Windows Management Instrumentation Service.

However, I never did reach C:\Windows]System32\wbem

--So it is half a job, I don't know where that leaves me-- and it has not helped

Are you well-versed in this disease/cure?

No, I am not very familiar at all with your specific problem but I do a lot of problem solving in general. This one is tough unfortunately and I'm beginning to wonder if you may have picked up some kind of malware infection. I think it's time to send you to our malware experts and let them have a look at your computer. If there is a problem they can and will help you fix it. If not come back here and we'll continue to work on it. I'll also get some of the other techs at G2G involved to see if they have any ideas on how to fix it.

Before doing that though, let's walk through the instructions at the link I gave you. Maybe I can help you get through them. See if this makes any more sense:

Boot into Safe Mode.
Login as Administrator (no password unless you assigned one. If so then use that)
Open a Command Prompt (Click on Start / Run / type cmd and press Enter)
Type net stop winmgmt and press Enter. This will stop the Windows Management Instrumentation Service.
Select this: C:\Windows\System32\wbem with your mouse, then right click and select Copy.
Click Start then Run. Right click in the Run box and select Paste then click OK. That will open C:\Windows\System32\wbem in Windows Explorer.
Locate the Repository folder. Right click on it and select Rename. Make it Repositoryold .
Restart the computer, login as Asministrator and open a Command Prompt.
Type net stop winmgmt and press Enter.
Type winmgmt /resetRepository and press Enter.
Restart your system.

Now see if you can create a System Restore Point manually. If not, go to the Virus, Spyware, Malware Removal forum, read the first post and follow instructions.

Come back here once you get a clean bill of health if you still have problems.
