Hello, I am not the owner of infected computer, but the owner has entrusted me with its repair. Her old boyfriend picked up a few viruses trying to watch some TV show on a dodgy "free streaming" sight or something like that. Well, the boyfriend is gone and the computer remains messed up. She's got Norton, and it's telling me every 20 seconds that it's blocking an attack from somewhere or another, the most recent one is ru.coolnuff.com. Also the computer will not shut down on its own. I did the start>shutdown, and it closed everything down and all the icons went off the desktop, but all it would do would show the desktop picture. It also causes the internet to go in and out of connectivity. She's got Norton Security Suite and McAfee security scan. Mcafee is saying nothing. Here's the OTL file, let me know if I can give you any more information:

EDIT:

Wow, I am having a hard time responding. I saw that the whole log did not copy and paste the first time I tried this. Whenever I try to put the whole log in to a reply message for this thread and click "post" it tells me the connection was reset. So I had to email myself the log, go on my own Macbook, and copy and paste it from there. Here it is:

Hi
 . My name is Michael and I am here to help you fix your computer.

Note: Before we start the process you should:
  • POST your logs, don't attach them, as it makes it harder to read. Also please don't edit any log in any case
  • Disable ANY programs that offer real-time protection features while executing my instructions. That includes your antivirus, antispyware, windows defender or any other program that offers protection. When you're clean or waiting for my next set of instructions, re-enable them .If you need any help disabling them, ask.
  • Topics that are idle for 4 days after I post instructions will be closed, unless I'm notified of the delay.
  • Last, as most of the tools we use here need administrative rights in order to function properly, I expect that you will be running them from an administrator account.

Sorry for the late replay. Do you still need help? If yes, follow these steps.
You got a big collection there :)

Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop.

Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it

Click the "Scan" button to start scan
Posted Image

On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply
Posted Image

Also in Desktop there should be a file called MBR.dat after that, zip it and then attach it here :)

Next:

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

I know that Norton sucks, but was still anxious about turning it off in order to fix stuff because of the rate it was "stopping things". At the end of all this, I know Norton is a tricky program, would you be able to help me remove it and instead use Avast! or some other similar or better virus protection program up instead? If you can't, please point me in the right direction! Thanks so much! Here's the logs:

I had to email myself the OTL logfile and then get on my mac to post it. I don't know if it's from the problems still stemming from the infected PC or what. It kept giving me the "connection was reset" message or something like that. Either way, here's the OTL logfile. Things seem to be running much better on the PC, less popup messages from the Norton, well, actually no popup messages

Hello
You'll need to disable Norton while doing the fixes. The infections won't develop in that timeline, as the tools usually take care of them, and when you finish a fix, you can enable it back :)

Are you sure that this was all the combofix log?

We'll replace Norton at the end, when you'll be clean

Warning!!
You have an information stealing trojan installed on your computer.
Backdoor Trojans, IRCBots, keyloggers and Infostealers are very dangerous because they provide a way of accessing a computer system that bypasses security mechanisms and can steal sensitive information like passwords, personal and financial data which they send back to the hacker. Remote attackers use backdoor Trojans as part of an exploit to to gain unauthorized access to a computer and take control of it without your knowledge.

If your computer was used for online banking, has credit card information or other sensitive data on it, I suggest you do the following.
  • All passwords should be changed to include those used for banking, email, eBay and forums. You should consider them to be compromised. They should be changed using a different computer and not the infected one. If you use the infected computer, an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information.
  • Banking and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breach.

So, computer did not respond so well to this round. It stopped when I ran the aswMBR the first time, then allowed for completion after a reboot on the second time. I have posted the log below. However, I cannot get the OTL log to finish up. When I run it, it goes through some of the process, then freezes the computer. Not completely, I still can use the mouse to drag the windows around that are up, but that's about it. What happens is there's 3 windows that are up. It's the OTL window doing it's thing, there's a system command window with "windows\system32\cmd.exe" up and running that has a few sentences on it, and then there's a notepad file opened that says { a bunch of #'s and letters }.ini in it's title box, and all that it says in the contents of it is: N o r t o n S e c u r i t y S c a n .

Then the computer freezes and I have to hard reboot. I think i may be having trouble turning Norton off. I'm disabling all its features individually, but it'd be great to just ice the whole thing on the spot. However this is just a guess as to what the problem may be. Thanks!

Hello,

Nice aswMBR log :)

Have Norton disabled again and try this:

Next:

Delete the copy of ComboFix you have as it's outdated

Download Combofix from any of the links below but rename it to explorer.com before and save it in your Desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

==================================

Click Start --> Run, and enter this command exactly as shown:

"%userprofile%\desktop\explorer.com" /killall

When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt so we can continue cleaning the system.

So, good news and bad news. Mostly good, the bad due to my stupidity. Good is that all the scans ran very smoothly, no problem. Bad news is I somehow made a bonehead maneuver of deleting the OTL log that came out of the first of the two scans. My mode of posting them here is to get the OTL log, email it to my gmail account, hop on my Mac, and then post to this forum, because that other computer won't let me post long replies to the forum. Unfortunately I think i didn't click "paste" in the body of the email and sent it to myself and closed the notepad window with the log in it without checking I had it. Duhhh..! If OTL saves its logs, that would be awesome, I can retrieve it, otherwise, so sorry! :)

Here are the Combofix and the second of the OTL logs, the one with the short Custom Scan dialogue box you gave me

Hello there
Normally now you should be able to post the logs from the sick computer. Try it and tell me if that's true :)

You are way back on some updates, like Windows and Java, and that's dangerous. You should try to keep up with program updates

Your logs are looking much better

Next:

Uninstall Java™ 6 Update 17
Then go here and download java again.

Next:

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :Files
    c:\documents and settings\Guest\Local Settings\Application Data\Ijaxuca.bin
    O16 - DPF: {8AD9C840-044E-11D1-B3E9-00805F499D93} http://java.sun.com/...indows-i586.cab (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_17)
    O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0017-ABCDEFFEDCBA} http://java.sun.com/...indows-i586.cab (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_17)
    O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-ABCDEFFEDCBA} http://java.sun.com/...indows-i586.cab (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_17)

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [EMPTYFLASH]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

Hmm, unfortunately it's telling me that it is unable to install Java after I download the .exe file and tell it to run. It says it's "unable to download http://javadl-esd.sunjdi00404 etc. etc. for installation" The Java Setup window stays open but if I click install, it tells me the download failed.

Otherwise the computer seems to be a lot better. Much smoother, quicker power up time. Thanks so much!

Hello,

We are not done yet. :)

  • Click start > run and type:
  • firewall.cpl
  • Enable Firewall
  • Click the Advanced tab.
  • Click the Restore Defaults button.
  • Click Yes to continue when you see this dialog

Next:

You have to update windows

Go here and make sure you install all updates that are available. That should include Service Pack 3. After it finishes installing and rebooting the computer go again to make sure that all available updates are installed

Next:

After all available updates are installed, download again java and try to install it.

Tell me your results

I think you may have intended to provide me with a link to download all the updates but it may not have gone through. What might that be?

Additionally, I tried to find Microsoft Service Pack 3 on my own and went here: http://update.microsoft.com

To which it said that I needed to use Internet Explorer in order to download it, but when I tried to open it, it wouldn't open and would crash immediately. I am replying to the messages now with the infected computer, haven't done a really long one yet though.
