I have Vista home Premium sp2,when i try to use system restore it is able to make a restore point,but when i try to run it,and computer goes thru process and reboots,i get a message,system restore encountered a problem,and no changes were made to computer.System restore failed due to an unspecified error,the system can not find the file specified (0x80070002).searching on internet,people there have said,to look for a file named sr.inf,click it,will reinstall system restore,but this file is not there in windows system 32 inf folder,is there anyway,besides a slipstream sp2 disc,that i can fix system restore,it is a good function to have,if neeed to rollback.

Hi jds63. Give this a try: 0x80070002 error in Vista Backup Centr

Topic is different and for Vista but may still apply to Windows 7 System Restore as Backup and System Restore are closely linked.

Look at the registry key specified in the 2nd post:

There was a post in there suggesting that this was down to profile entries in the Registry without an image path.

So I looked at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

and lo and behold there were two profile keys in there without profile image paths. No idea how they got there.

Have deleted them and Backup is now working again.

So open regedit, navigate to the specified key.
Expand ProfileList.
Click on each entry under it and look at ProfileImagePath on the right.

If you see any that do not have a valid path, right click on the key on the left and Export it to save it then delete the key on the left. Export is in case this causes any problems which it should not do if the ProfielImagePath is invalid.

Hi,ty,for reactivated this,but i have tried this method,and removed a path,that was not valid,meaning with no path image,turned out to be my stardock objectdock profile,all others had a path image,my searches on internet i saw this resolution to try,like i said,it didn't work,ty,tho

Try running System File Checker.

Open an Elevated Command Prompt:

Start / All Programs / Accessories. Right click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator.

Type sfc /scannow and press Enter. Let it run to completion.

Then see if System Restore works.

Lets see what's installed on your computer. Download and install CCleaner from the following link: CCleaner - Standard

During installation, uncheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar.

Click on Tools (ICON) and Select the following BUTTONS to create two (2) text files:

* Uninstall > Save to text file (install) – bottom right corner of app window
* Startup > Save to text file (startup)

Locate and open each saved file in the ‘Documents’ FOLDER:

* Copy and paste the contents of each file into your next post (2 files).

Nothing jumps out as something that would cause SR to fail. Doing a lot of searching on the internet shows this is not an uncommon problem. What bugs me is why it can't tell you what file it's having problems with.

One suggestion I just came across says to run System Restore from the Recovery Console and see if that works.

What are the system recovery options in Windows Vista?. Scroll down to To access the System Recovery Options menu.

It's also been suggested to setup your system to do a Clean Boot before doing the restore.
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7. I don't know if this will work or not as there may be services needed to complete a restore that are not running in this scenario. Woth trying though.

TY,for reply,i have tried doing a system restore from the windows cd once before,didn't work,there is no way for me to do it,from the recovery cd's or from gateway recovery,not sure if trying a clean boot may work,kind of skeptical of trying it,i think i may have or can i try to do it in safe mode,think i did once before.the error i get when i try system restore is,unspecified error occurred during system restore,nothing was changed,system restore failed due to a unspecified error,the system cannot find the file specified (0x80070002),when i did research,people say i can reinstall system restore by looking for an inf file called sr.inf,but this file is missing and i think another file,called sys. something has to do with system restore,although thy said this has nothing to do with it running,just wish i knew a way to reinstall it,except for the confusing slipstream sp2 disc,thinks my only option is a complete reinstall of windows vista,which is timely an a pain to do.ty,again for trying.

There is no way to reinstall System Restore in Vista or Windows 7 that I'm aware of. sr.inf no longer exists, that was XP.

The appropriate files are stored in the install.wim file in the Sources folder. The WIM file is much like an ISO, and the contents are extracted during Vista's installation. It is possible to mount the file/extract the contents, but it's doubtful that copying out that one file would resolve the problem. And, unlike Windows XP, Vista does not feature a repair installation option for such occasions. Thus, when SFC fails there's not much recourse.

However:
1.) If you have a manufacturer's system recovery system which offers a non-destructive repair option you can still reinstall Vista without losing your files/settings/programs.

2.) If you have a retail copy of Vista you can run System Restore from the DVD by going through the Repair my computer option instead of choosing Install Now. Using System Restore that way now may enable you to go back to a time while System Restore was still properly installed on your computer.

3.) You can try pressing F8 during boot and choosing the 'Last known good configuration' option, if such is available.

I guess there is noway to resolve this,unless i do a reformat,and put everything back on,meaning reinstall vista,i was looking into a program called rollback rx,had issues were it didn't work,also i heard of another program called acronis true image,but skeptical,cause of my issues with rollback rx,can sometimes coorrupt MBR.System restore is a good program to have,in case of an eroor,need to go back,also know of one like Nortons ghost.There is nothing on my recovery disc.i also have a second partition,which has my backup,but made CD'S.TY,for your help.

I use Acronis True Image and highly recommend it. I backup my Recovery partition, C:, D: and E: drives. You can have it setup so pressing F11 during boot will take you to the Acronis recovery screen where you can restore form a backup image.

There are free backup programs that also work well, like Macrium Reflect Free which I use at the shop.

Thank you for your help,i will think of giving Acronis True Image a try,cause of good reviews and you say u recommend it too.Had another issue about uknown file in winsock lsp,in a hijackthis log,that u can not post here it was listed 9 times,i was told from someone here it had to do with parental controls,which i don't use.Wondering if u knew this could be an issue.i will post two logs if u can take a look for me,let me know.the two were from a OTL program told me to use here,the highjackThis,which people say,isn't good to use anymore,but i posted,so u can take a look,TY.
