Is the drive a DVD-RW drive or a DVD-ROM?
If DVD-RW then is there a Recording tab showing when you look at the drive properties.
Open My Computer, right click on the DVD drive and select Properties. Is there a Recording tab?
If not, see here: Why no Recording tab?

Lots more Google results for recording tab windows xp

Once again I must say sorry for not ending a thread, woops.
It tuned out that that PC had a badly damaged USB bus (probably it had a dongle in it that had been knocked), so I junked it.
Thanks for trying to help, I sure learn a lot from this site.
