I just reformatted my Dell Dimension 2400, and reloaded XP. I haven't used the PC in 2 years, so it has been gathering all the windows updates it missed. everything runs smooth, except the internet. I am running IE6, and it is stalling everytime I get to certain pages. I tried to upgrade to IE7 or 8, but it tells me that I need a different windows version.

Is the problem becuase I have an outdated version of IE, or is this possibly an internal problem? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Have you made sure the SP is at SP3 so that IE can upgrade?
Push and hold the Windows key on keyboard. This is the one with the Microsft windows logo on it.
While holding Win key down click on the Pause\Break key

This should open the System properties window
On this window it will show

System info:

Microsoft Windows: type and version
Service Pack number

Registered Name
Register Number

Computer:
CPU type
Memory
I need all the above info in your next reply Except for Register name and number.
This is private and we don't need to know this information

Here is the information... Is it possible that the outdated IE6 could be causing the lockup?

Microsoft Windows: Windows XP Home Edition
Service Pack number: Service Pack 2

Computer: Intel ®
CPU type: Pentium®4 CPU 2.8 Ghz
Memory: 2.79 Ghz, 512 MB of Ram

Thanks!

Service Pack number: Service Pack 2

This needs to be updated to SP3 because of serious security risks.
Can you get to Microsoft's Windows Update and do all Critical System Updates first please.
